Born in 1946, I LOVE this music! My older siblings had the 45's playing on our old record player all the time and we all enjoyed it. It brings back good memories of a happy childhood and nothing can take its place. THANK YOU for sharing it with the world!

For those a little younger, we had record players in our cars that played 45s. Operated like a CD player. Also one that took 14 records but that was better played when parked. It could skip over bumps.

Music Theray. Music reaches areas of the brain that language can't. I would do some exercises with my Special Ed. Students using music. It worked like a charm for memory and sung communication. We can all participate in this wonderful transmission.

Dave Barter I was born in 1949 and started taking drum lessons in 1954. I played drums to Doo Wop and I loved it. R & R and Doo Wop was the greatest music for learning to play drums. I loved it then and I do now at age 72. I still play drums with it.

One of my favorite songs in 1958 & 59 was "Long Lonely Nights" by Lee Andrews and The Hearts", during my Junior & Senior years. Graduated in 1959. I also loved the Platters. They had been around for quite a while. Loved all their hits, including "Harbor Lights, Twilight Time, Only You, The Great Pretender. Just about anything they sang. I was into Rock & Roll, Country & Rhythm & Blues. I have cassettes in its own case I bought back in the 1990s. The problem is I don't think any of my children or grandkids will be interested in them when I'm gone. I have a lot of Gene Autry memorabilia that I don't think anyone is going to want either. A 1950 puzzle of Gene, all pieces there, wrapped in cellophane. 3 - 8X10 pictures nice wood framed, one signed by him. A picture of Gene and the original Champion before WW II. A case of cassettes of his old radio shows. So, Yes I have always been a Gene Autry fan. I love to hear him sing in the movies, which I have a few of them also. Two metal box cases of 45 records. One is mostly country, in like-new condition. The other one is of records I bought when I was young. Before & after I graduated.
I have really enjoyed listening to these old songs from my high school days & after. Thank You for posting, these songs of yesteryear. Sure brought back so many memories.

@Rick Higginson The problem with donating to a museum (as I see it) is that your collection may never see the light of day to other humans! Some museums have so many donations that, even rotating their collections, no one might ever see it. Better, I think, to get in touch with others who share your interest who WILL appreciate the unique items in your collection. A search in the vast knowledge database that is the internet should yield like-minded persons or groups.

There are a lot of people who are fans of the 'oaters,' Country movies, music, old movies & shows. Reissues. Eventually, find someone who will treasure your collection! It would be a shame to just throw everything out, into the trash - . Toward his final days, Buster Keaton gave a large trunk, of his effects, some films, to a young man who was an 'extreme' Keaton fan.

Great post, Kevin! You have the original hits. I listened to some of the Youtube postings of “Billboard” hits and they aren’t all the original recordings. Some performers think they can improve in the originals. It NEVER works. Those of us who first heard the original hits know the difference.

She was only 50 years old, I miss her terribly sadly she died of alcoholism. Every time I saw her she was listening to doowop and had a cocktail in her hand.

I was born in the 50's, and I love, and have respect for all music that is good, and requires talent. However my friends, and I always thought we were born too late. We used to practice the doo woo songs in halls, and bathrooms to try to sound like the originals. Those artist, just like that era was a once in lifetime experience, and I envy those who got to experience it first hand.

My father listened to these every sunday back in the 80s and early 90s, i was born in 1978. Such a great time. Still have a doo wop collection among my 90s US alternative rock, Japanese city pop, 80s britpop and 2000s hits.

Timeless music doo wop is.
My wife is still baffled by my choice of such a varied and different types of music.

I would recommend listening to doo wop as part of a child's wholesome developement.

You tap into the universal for us all. I am 75 yr and have been associated with this music as I was in a Doo Wop group. Although I have had a full varied life, it is my high school years in New Jersey that I get lost in. I think Ronny Millsap captures that in his song, "Lost In The 50s Tonight.". I don[t know when you were born. Music is the best when Dion was singing. However, this was this guy in Germany named Adolf Hitler. Some of the world was sane, but, man, some was definitely not. Not to bum you out: just to say that all history must be remembered for the sake of the world.

You guys had segregation, race riots, the cold war and nuclear missile crisis, presidential assassination, Vietnam, massive protests, and the CIA running amok domestically and abroad. I was born in '44 and the cruel thing is the Tennessee radio stations near enough to me wouldn't play this "colored" music until much later.I discovered this music in '62 when I went to college in Birmingham Alabama and discovered a black radio station there. I have loved it ever since . By the way our football coach was Bobby Bowden.

a lot of the cover tunes that were done by the white counter parts, lacked the "SOUL" of the tune, it was a real joke listening to pat boone sing "ain't that a shame" or "tutti-frutti" or "long tall sally". this music that pat boone played , with his squeaky clean , mister goodie two shoes image, he should have concentrated on tunes like "love letters in the sand" instead!!!!

Many of the songs were done as "white covers" to make it acceptable to radio stations that wouldn't play the "colored" music. Their loss.

I agree. I was born in 1943 and grew up with guys singing doo wow on the corners of 110st in Manhattan. Those were the days when we had dance parties with colored lights in the ceiling and romance in the air.

Born in `43 ,thank God! Belonged to the United In group Harmony Association (UGHA)run by the great RONNIE "I" ITALIANO which was the greatest club ever. We were entertained by really great doo wop groups every month and always had a fantastic time and partied with the nicest people. Thank you, Ronnie! Great! Great, memories.

Can you list your favorites? "So Young" by the students, "Desiree" by the Charts, "We Belong Together" by Robert and Johnny, "Suzie Darlin" by Robin Luke, "Little Star" by The Elegants, "Since I don't have You" by The Skyliners, "Only the Lonely" by Roy Orbinson, "Hushabye" by The Mystics. I could go on but it would take a lifetime. There will never be another time like this. So glad I was a teenager in this era.

@Steve Sayewich Ben E. King. How many hearts and souls has he helped or healed… no one knows. My personal favorite was Percy Sledge “When a ‘Man Loves a Woman.” According to a music historian Percy went on stage and sang it from his heart. When finished he went back stage and wrote down the words so he wouldn’t lose them. He was a man in love. Real love is amazing and its loss is among the bitterest and harshest of wounds.

Transcendent? I’ve had a couple of experiences with that.

Enjoy Pandora. The girl groups were great. I was 14 again for a little while.

@Rascal01 Well, a special surprise. I'll check out the Pandora twist. Technology allows for wonderful and creative modes of communication. I just finished emailing my VA therapist information into my research on the philosopher, Emil Cioran. I told her that I found listening to an ambient work by the composer Jeremy Soule called, "Tundra (Skyrim),"
made my experience transcendent. The subject could have been disturbing but accompanied by music, my reading was elevated. Much like listening to, The Paris Sisters, singing, "I Love How You Love Me," or when my girlfriend in high school broke up with me and Skeeter Davis singing, "It's The End of The World," was my solace. How many time have The Drifters and Ben E. King been there for me? But I don't have to tell you. Thanks for listening Brother.

I see her on YouTube from time to time. Her face radiates love, peace, joy and happiness. She just projects genuine warmth. I fell in love and later learned she’s no longer with us. Luck of the Irish. By the way, if you haven’t done it, join Pandora. Fund your favorite doo-wop tunes and enjoy the day.

I was born in ‘47. By ‘56 Elvis was the rage and the little girls loved him. The blond girl up the street got her parents to take us on a date, my first. I was 9. All she did was play in her food and stare at me. I ate like any 9 year old boy and thought she was crazy.

By ‘57 it was early rock and rockabilly. “Like a rubber ball I’ll come bouncing back to you” and “Little Darlin’” by the Diamonds. By the late 50s Doo-wop was taking off and I was up to my neck in it. I loved it. Picking a favorite was impossible and I can’t keep track of them all. There was a New York sound, a Jersey sound, a Philly sound and local hits to boot. And in Detroit we had Motown. One of my favorite girl groups was the Chiffons with “He’s so Fine” in February 1963.

You know the drill. Then came the war. We can’t go back, we can’t change a thing and life doesn’t come with an eraser. Yesterday is gone, maybe you will have tomorrow. All we really have is today so don’t waste it. All learned the hard way. Nothing teaches making good decisions like making bad ones and living through the results. Let it go. Dwelling on it is only wasting today. Enjoy the music and move on. At our age it is time to enjoy life,
