The Bet
Nailpin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He loves straight answers
His credo: ask the eightball
That's just a way to say
Goodbye to responsibilities
He always relies on the role of
The dice I'm
so very sick of you!
To crawl back at us when things go wrong...

Haven't you noticed, haven't you noticed before
we said goodbye

Every way, every way
Is justified if that could save his day
But in the end he lost his friends from all the betting

Straight from the gutter
He grew up smooth as silk
Isn't it ironic that your proud old scene is caving in?

Haven't you noticed, haven't you noticed before
we said goodbye

Every way, every way
Is justified if that could save his day
But in the end he lost his friends from all the betting

Fell in love with the word desire
He just could not let it go
Greed has set his heart on fire
Lost everything he loved

Every way, every way

Is justified if that could save his day
But in the end he lost his friends from all the betting

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nailpin's song "The Bet" tell the story of a person who loves taking risks and pushing boundaries. He believes that his motto of "ask the eightball" - relying on random luck to make decisions - is a way of avoiding responsibility. The singer is frustrated with this person's behavior and tired of him coming back to them when things go wrong. The person is characterized as always relying on chance and gambling, even when it comes to relationships and friendships. He justifies his actions by saying that every way is justified if it saves his day, but in the end, he loses all his friends due to his gambling addiction.

The chorus repeats the idea that every way is justified if it saves his day. The singer recognizes that this person fell in love with the word desire and could not let it go. Greed set his heart on fire, and he lost everything he loved. The final message of the song is that while taking risks can be exciting, gambling and addiction can lead to the loss of everything important.

Overall, the lyrics of "The Bet" reflect on the toxic behavior of gambling addiction and the consequences that come with it. It is a warning to those who seek to push boundaries and take risks without considering the consequences.

The Tracey Ullman version of this song is my all time favourite song. However, this is a great cover - never heard of these guys, but they really do it justice!
