Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nana Mouskouri's song Erev Shel Shoshanim translate to "Evening of Roses". The lyrics describe a romantic moment in a garden filled with fragrant flowers such as roses, where the couple is enjoying the quietness of the evening. The two lovers are surrounded by the scents of myrrh and frankincense, which add to the intensity of their connection. The singer suggests that the woman is the key to unlocking his heart's secrets, and he longs to sing a love song to her.

The lyrics create an ambiance of serenity, love, and desire. The coupling of the two in a garden filled with flowers and the scent of herbs and spices makes it sensual and romantic. The singer depicts his longing and desire for his love, even though he cannot find the words to express it. The lines, "Ly la yored lead, Verouach shoshanenosh va" mean "Night descends, the scent of roses wafting." The image of the evening giving way to a fragrant and romantic night is highly evocative.

This is a wonderful rendition of the Hebrew EREV SHEL SHOSHANIM by Nana Mouskouri. I saw her sing this live in the outdoor amphitheatre on the beach in Caesarea, Israel, when I worked there as a Hilton chef in the 1990's. I met her on the beach after the show once the crowd had dissipated and she was most humble and gracious to meet. The audience loved her two Hebrew songs, and my Israeli friends who were with me said that she pronounced the Hebrew just like an Israeli! It was one of the songs that helped me to learn Hebrew which I needed for my chef job.

Although this Josef Hadar’s song isn’t originally a Christmas song, we Finns know it as such. It’s a very popular song in advent time in our country, together with G. J Vogler’s ”Hosianna, Davids Son”.

Hadar’s wonderful composition became an advent song, because one Finnish theologian in the Sixties heard it and wrote Christian lyrics to it. The song can be found in the official hymnal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (number 15) and is called ”Tiellä ken vaeltaa” (Who is it that wanders down the road). The song depicts the scene where Jesus rides on a donkey into Jerusalem.

Nana Mouskouri’s interpretation in Hebrew is marvellous!
