Amazing Grace
Nana Mouskouri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to feel
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Though many dangers toils and snares
We have already come
'Twas grace that brought us save that far
And grace will lead us home

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.

I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nana Mouskouri's rendition of Amazing Grace speak about a profound feeling of redemption and hope. Grace, in Christianity, is seen as a gift from God that cannot be earned or achieved by human effort. The first verse speaks of how sweet the sound of grace is, and how it saved a wretch like the singer. It is a powerful reminder of the redemptive power of faith and how it can transform a person's life. The second verse talks about how grace has taught the singer's heart to feel and relieved her fears - this could be seen as a reference to the comfort that comes from believing in something bigger than oneself. The final verse emphasizes the resilience of the human spirit in the face of danger and the journey home that grace will lead the singer through.

I'm not a religious person but this song always gives me goosebumps. This is the finest version of the song I've heard too. Nana is simply an astoundingly good vocalist. As pure a voice as you are ever likely to hear.

@gulis4u

Possibly the most wonderful hymn in the world of spiritual music sung by one of the best voices mankind has heard. Listen to the lyrics. Listen to her voice. If there is anything divine, this is it!

@Debbp65

the voice of a saint that sounds like the angels. God's Peace is passed to us through this wonderful song. His Mercy & Grace is endless, Praise God.

I don't understand how anyone could say hateful things about this song or Nana's singing. I have loved this song for a long time and Nana sings it like and angel. Both are beautiful

@rickshabs

Judy Collins may be a close second but Nana still has the best "Amazing Grace" on the internet. The voice of an angel. As far as the words to the song is concerned, what can anyone say? We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. God saved the chiefest of sinners; the apostle Paul, and He saved a wretch like me, so I add my amens to the title - AMAZING GRACE !

How can you say it is not a song for funerals? Surely it is a song that can be played to bring peace and comfort to people, no matter what the circumstances. I played this at my Brother's funeral as the words were so pertinent and I know it was a song that he held close to his heart. It is a truly lovely song and I think that it deserves to be heard wherever it can bring hope and inspiration.

Truly uplifting, fulfilling. A God-given voice, for sure.

I worked on this video. At the time I was a runner & it was a privilege to work with Mrs. Nana Mouskouri. We shot this in Athens (on a hill overlooking the city, and inside a chiurch in Kolonaki) for a UK program in 2004. It was an extremely hot day & during the breaks from filming, I would gladly stand beside her with a huge black umbrella to help keep her in the shade. It was one of the proudest moments in all the years of my workingn. Down to earth, funny, friendly and kind. Pure talent....

@vihunt8077

The best rendition of Amazing Grace ever recorded. I have loved this lady since I was 16 and still today at 71.  Bravo Nana.

@Lpmgato1

This is one of the greatest Christian songs of all time, sung by one of the world's greatest woman singers. Truly beautiful, inspirational, thrilling. To me, Nana Mouskouri sets a standard few if any will ever equal, and is matched perhaps only by the late, legendary Taiwanese singer, Teresa Teng. I love both of them...Many thanks for posting this awesome rendition..
