First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Nana Mouskouri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love
To the dark and the empty skies

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
And felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command

The first time ever I lay with you
I felt the earth move in my hand
I thought our joy would fill the earth

And last till the end of time, my love
And last till the end of time

Overall Meaning

The song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Nana Mouskouri is a beautiful love ballad that speaks of the intense emotions felt by an individual the very first time they laid their eyes on their beloved. The first verse talks about the initial sighting of the person, and the overwhelming feelings that came with it. The imagery used in the lyrics is poetic, as the singer is saying that the person's eyes were so bright that they felt like the sun had risen in them, and the moon and stars were gifts they gave to the dark, empty sky. This points towards the person being a bright and shining light in the darkness, and their love eclipsing everything else.

The second verse, meanwhile, focuses on the first time the singer kissed their beloved. The lyrics speak of a feeling of complete surrender and control, like the beating heart of a captive bird that was there at their command. This indicates that the singer had complete power over their beloved when they shared their first kiss, and that the emotions were intense enough to make the person lose all control.

Finally, the third verse delves into the first time the singer and their beloved made love. The lyrics talk about the earth moving in the singer's hand, and the idea that their joy would last till the end of time. This verse is a poetic representation of the intense emotions that come with physical intimacy, and how the singer felt like they had found their forever in that moment.

In conclusion, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a beautifully written love song that speaks to the universal experiences of falling in love, surrendering to its power, and the overwhelming emotions that come with it.

The best version of this song but the Wikipedia entry doesn’t even mention Nana Mouskouri! This will always be one of my favourite songs.
