I Dreamed You
Nana Mouskouri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"The night is cold, the air is still"
The earth lies frozen in the chill
My fingers idly trace your name
Across the icy window pane
The stars look down so bright and clear
I close my eyes and wish you near
"You come to me, you always do"
I dreamed you
All at once the winter's done
And warm my field the summer sun
We walked through fields where flowers grow
The way we did so long ago
I leave this weary world behind
And softly find you in my mind
'Cause lying in the morning dew
I dreamed you
I dreamed your fingers touched my face
I feel you're locked in my embrace
"As once more you are mine, but now..."
The summer sun is growing dim
I stand here lonely in the wind
And hear the sounds of spring no more
For like so many times before
You drift away and I recall
But you were never here at all
For now the interlude is through
I only dreamed you

I only dreamed you
I only dreamed you

Overall Meaning

In "I Dreamed You," Nana Mouskouri sings about a love that she dreams about during a cold and lonely night. She traces the name of her lover on the window pane and closes her eyes, wishing him near. She dreams of the two of them walking through fields of flowers in the warm sunshine, leaving the weary world behind. The dream feels so real that she feels as though her lover's fingers are touching her face and that he is locked in her embrace. However, as the dream comes to an end, the reality sets in that her lover is not actually with her, leaving her feeling lonely and longing for his presence.

The song reflects the idea of escapism through the dreams of love. The vivid imagery of the winter and summer seasons, fields of flowers and starry nights, contrasts with the coldness of reality. Despite the fleeting nature of dreams, they provide a temporary relief from the painful emptiness of loneliness.

This was the song that led me to the wonderful life-long journey of having my days filled with her voice - I was 16 then and 51 now and between now and then my life has been blessed by being able to share her gift of song - this is so special because it was the first song I heard her sing - thanks

I had this recording many years ago, and I have been looking for a good copy of it for a long time. This isn't the best but it is a wonderful song by the the most wonderful voice of Nana. I suppose as a man I am not supposed to say things like this, but she was, is, and always will be the best.
