Morning Has Broken
Nana Mouskouri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Morning has broken
Like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the world

Sweet the rains new fall
Sunlit from heaven
Like the first dew fall
On the first grass
Praise for the sweetness
Of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness
Where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight
Mine is the morning
Born of the one light
Eden so play
Praise with elation
Praise every morning
God' s recreation
Of the new day

Morning has broken
Like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning

Praise for them springing
Fresh from the world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nana Mouskouri's "Morning Has Broken" reflects on the beauty and magnificence of the natural world, specifically, the mornings. The singer describes how each morning feels like a new beginning- when the sun rises, and the birds start singing, and the world wakes up anew. The image of the blackbird speaking like the first bird cements this fact, telling the listener that the morning’s beauty has remained ever-since the beginning of times. The singer continues on to praise the morning, praising it for the singing that seems to come from every corner of the earth, and for the promise of new opportunities and possibilities that comes with each morning.

The second verse of the song seems to focus on the beauty of nature itself, as the rains create a natural feeding ground for the grass to grow while rejuvenating the world. The dew that falls on the grass links the beauty between heaven and earth- the holy and the physical- inspiring feelings of awe and wonder. The singer goes on to praise the sweetness and completeness of the wet garden, created where God’s feet have passed. The final verse seems to suggest that each morning is God’s creation, and each day is a recreation of the new day, complete with new beginnings and renewed opportunities. In summary, "Morning Has Broken" is a song of praise to the magnificence of nature, and gratefulness for the opportunity to experience its beauty.

My favorite version of this song is Nana's!

I'd always noticed that she sang "recreation" (as in "rest and recreation") rather than "re-creation" (creating again and again, every morning). And I thought it was due to English not being her first language. But I've just listened to the Cat Stevens version and he sings the same. I wonder whether there is a definitive version of the words that Eleanor Farjeon wrote, and whether she wrote "re-creation" to make the meaning and pronunciation abundantly clear, or whether she was actually being very clever and she did mean "recreation" to tie in with the "Eden saw *play*".
