Noam Chomsky described the "new" American style Libertarianism as just a little more "elite" to the standard Neoliberalism"

With the word freedom, having nothing to do with humanity, and everything to do about allowing the market to "freely" develop slave labour in the tune of the United Nations statistics of 21 million slaves producing 150 billion dollars in products per year, increasing more, every year.....

In conjunction with the "freedom" to allow Wall Street to run a muck in fraud, as they did in 2008, where they maintained their "freedom" from going to jail.

I agree with Noam Chomsky, and will add that American ( morphed differently from European) Libertarianism is just another corporate shill.

The larger problem? IMO, the utter silence and inaction of the neoliberal centrist Dems. They didn't seem to mind the losses of 1000 state positions, governorships, even the Presidency. I think their silence is complicity.
On a separate (Koch note), I especially appreciated learning of their toxic influence in South America and their pernicious activities in Venezuela, especially need to be exposed.

@Tom Lahr What libertarians typically do is focus on distortions in the system – like government corporate bailouts or distorted wage and exchange rate scales – that move prices away from what the free market would produce.

Whilst their arguments are reasonable in many cases at least, there exist very powerful interests who would be opposed to a constitutional ban on corporate bailouts like those of the Obama administration, and there are equally powerful interests who benefit from (for instance) distorted exchange rates instead of the relative import and export prices a gold standard would produce. For instance, hundred of millions of people in Europe and Asia have vested interest in a weak Australian dollar so that they can buy Australia’s superabundant natural resources more cheaply, and the US military does not want a weak US dollar that would limit their capacity to buy minerals the US does not possess but which are essential to many advanced weapons.

Projection-An estimate of a future situation, yes. A warning in fact. Yet even more so, an expose of a generally unknown, stealth, neo-conservative Libertarian economic and political strategy which has achieved power at the highest levels of American government, business and education. Can you provide evidence that her claims lack validity (ie, debunk with evidence what she claims to be fact)? Your (I assume non-professional) psychological assessment of MacLean as lacking “self-awareness” is entirely presumptive and frankly irrelevant. (stating an opinion that, for example, “the lack of intelligence is stunning”, would at least be contextual, though still quite incorrect, in my opinion. During the Q&A, she states, “Libertarians have to provide some explanation of why ,if the system is fair, and Capitalism is a great system, you have people..who have not thrived in the system....”

I have absolutely no idea why she claims that libertarians were ever hostile to organized religion. (Around 47.00). Objectivists were, to be sure, but they're a very small portion of libertarians. In fact, many prominent libertarians are themselves devoutly religious. This isn't the only false claim that she makes in this talk. The Cato Institute continue to be vocal in support of legalized prostitution and legalized drugs; any quick Google search will quickly bring up very recent Cato policy articles in favor of these views. Many of her serious errors in Democracy in Chains have now been well-documented, in both academic reviews and in the press--ranging from the Washington Post to the Guardian, in Britain. It's now being referred to as "spectulative fiction" by outlest as respectable as the Wall Street Journal. I would be very interested to see MaClean debate another academic, such as Mike Munger, Art Carden, or Phil Magness--but she always refuses to engage with them, refusing in-person debates and refusing to address any criticism. It's pretty clear why.

It's really sad to listen to her politically motivated explanations of James Buchanan's extremely objective work. The funny thing is that some of what she said about James Buchanan's work might be true but it's spun and delivered in a way that makes it sound as though James Buchanan was sinister when in fact his work is all about making sure sinister things are not imposed by momentary majorities on powerless minorities.
