San Francisco
Nancy Sinatra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This great big world to make a place you love
My home up on the hill
I find I love you still
I've been away but now I'm back to tell you
San Francisco
Open your golden gate
San Francisco
Here is your wandering one
Saying I'll wander no more
Other places only make me love you best
Tell me you're the heart of all the golden west
San Francisco
Welcome me home again
I'm coming home
To go roaming no more
The Nancy Sinatra classic "San Francisco" is a tribute to the City by the Bay, and to the songwriter's connection to it. The lyrics speak to the idea that it doesn't take much to make a place feel like home. Sinatra's home up on the hill is a tiny corner of the great big world, but it's her place that she loves. She's been away, but now she's back to tell San Francisco that she still loves it.
The song reflects the love that people from all over the world have for San Francisco. The city is known for being open and welcoming, as the lyrics reflect. No stranger is kept waiting outside the door, and the city is described as the heart of all the golden west. The imagery of the Golden Gate Bridge is also evoked, as the gates are opened to welcome the singer back. It's a love letter to the city that captures the feeling of homecoming.
Overall, "San Francisco" is a song that celebrates the beauty and openness of San Francisco, and the personal connection that so many people feel with the city. It's a tribute to the idea that home is where the heart is, and to the idea that even a tiny corner of the world can feel like the most important place in the world.
