Somethin' you call love but confess
You've been a'messin' where you shouldn't 've been a'messin'
And now someone else is getting all your best
These boots are made for walkin'
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
You keep lyin' when you oughta be truthin'
And you keep losing when you oughta not bet
You keep samin' when you oughta be a'changin'
Now what's right is right but you ain't been right yet
These boots are made for walkin'
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
You keep playin' where you shouldn't be playin'
And you keep thinkin' that you'll never get burnt (ha)
I just found me a brand new box of matches, yeah
And what he knows you ain't had time to learn
These boots are made for walkin'
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
Are you ready, boots? Start walkin'
Nancy Sinatra's hit song "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" was released in 1966 and became an instant hit. It speaks about a woman who is fed up with her man and his lies and decides to walk away from him. The song starts with the lyrics "You keep sayin' you've got somethin' for me, somethin' you call love but confess, You've been a'messin' where you shouldn't 've been a'messin', And now someone else is getting all your best." The lyrics suggest that the man has been unfaithful and is not committed to the relationship. He has been "a'messin" with someone else, and the woman knows it.
The chorus of the song, "These boots are made for walkin', and that's just what they'll do, one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you," indicates that the woman is going to leave the man behind and move on with her life. She has had enough of his deceptive ways, and she is ready to take control of her life. The second verse of the song continues the theme of the woman's frustration with her man's behavior. The lyrics go, "You keep lyin' when you oughta be truthin', and you keep losing when you oughta not bet, You keep samin' when you oughta be a'changin', Now what's right is right but you ain't been right yet". Here, Nancy Sinatra talks about the man's continued lying and gambling, and his inability to change his ways and do what is right.
The final verse talks about the woman finding a "brand new box of matches," which is symbolic of her newfound independence and willingness to move forward without the man who has been causing her pain. The lyrics go, "You keep playin' where you shouldn't be playin', and you keep thinkin' that you'll never get burnt (ha), I just found me a brand new box of matches, yeah, And what he knows you ain't had time to learn". The woman has found the courage to leave the man behind and start a new life without him.
