Nancy Sinatra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Getting to it naturally, really getting there,
[Getting such a high on, loving what I do,]
I'm so full of happiness, my hope's on something new,
[Each day on earth is a day that's worth remembering]
(remembering, remembering).
[My pot is filled with flowers, my grass is bright and
green,]
My tears brewing in my cup, and still I make the scene.
[But just don't try to change me, I love the world I found,]
I've got to fly my own sweet way, and don't you shoot me down.
[hahaha]
(remembering, remembering).
(a ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling).
Don't pity me, I'm glad to be a ding-a-ling, [a ding-a-ling],
(ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling).
( ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling).
Ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling, (ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling,
ding-a-ling).
Ha ha ha, that's silly.(ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling).
The lyrics of Nancy Sinatra's song "Things" express the artist's contentment with simple, natural pleasures. She starts the song by saying that she's "getting stoned on sunshine" and "getting high on air," implying that she's high on life and enjoying all that the world has to offer naturally. The next line reveals that she's really getting there, that is to say, she's content and satisfied. She's loving what she does, and this is shown in the line "getting such a high on, loving what I do." The artist is happy with her lot in life and it's evident in the lyrics of the song.
As the song progresses, the artist reflects on how each day on earth is worth remembering, in essence life is beautiful and should be savored. The lyrics seem to suggest that every waking moment should be enjoyed and remembered because they are all worth it. She mentions her teacup brimming with tears, implying that she has overcome sadness and is now just happy. The final lyrics express the artist's love for the world she found and a desire to fly her own "sweet" way without anyone trying to shoot her down. The song is a beautiful ode to the simple pleasures in life, promoting a carefree and happy outlook on life.

Every night I sit here by my window (window)
Staring at the lonely avenue (avenue)
Watching lovers holdin' hands
And laughin' (ha ha ha)
Thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do
(Thinkin' 'bout things)
Like a walk in the park (things)
Like a kiss in the dark (things)
Like a sailboat ride (ya ya)
What about the night we cried
Things like a lover's vow
Things that we don't do now
Thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do
Memories are all I have to cling to (cling to)
And heartaches are the friends
I'm talkin' to (but you got me now)
When I'm not thinkin' of just how much
I love you ('bout I love you, too)
I'm thinkin' the things we used to do
(Used to do, thinkin' 'bout things)
Like a walk in the park (things)
Like a kiss in the dark (things)
Like a sailboat ride (ya ya)
What about the night we cried
Things like a lover's vow
Things that we don't do now
Thinkin' about the things we used to do
I still can hear the juke box softly
Playin' (playin')
And the face I see each day belongs to you
(Belongs to you)
But there's not a single sound
And there's nobody else around
But that's just me thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do
(We used to do, thinkin' 'bout things)
Like a walk in the park (things)
Like a kiss in the dark (things)
Like a sailboat ride (ya ya)
What about the night that we cried
Things like a lover's vow
Things that we don't do now
Thinkin' about the things we used to do
And heartaches are the friends I'm talkin' to
You got me thinkin' 'bout
The things we used to do (I hope so)
Thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do
