Young Hearts Run Free
Nancy Wallace Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's the sense in sharing this one and only life
Ending up, just another lost and lonely wife
You count up the years, and they will be filled with tears, oooh
Love only breaks up, to start over again
You'll get the babies, but you won't have your man
While he is busy loving every woman that he can, huh huh

Say I wanna leave a thousand times a day
It's easier said that done, when I just can't break away
Just can't break away

Young hearts, run free
Never be hung up, hung up like my man and me (oooh)
Hmmm, my man and me
Young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when loving is all there is (oooh)
I said I don't love you

It's high time, just one crack at life
Who we want to live in, trouble and strife
My mind must be free, to learn all I can about me
I'm gonna love me for the rest of my days
Caress the babies every time they say
Self resevation is what's really going on today, oooh

Say I wanna leave a thousand times a day
How can I turn loose
When you just can't break away (just can't break away)

Young hearts, run free
Never be hung up, hung up like my man and me (oooh)
Oooh, my man and me
Whoa, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when loving is all there is (oooh)
I said I don't love you, hmmm

Oh, whoa
Oh, whoa
Oh, whoa
Oh, whoa

Young hearts, run free
Never be hung up, hung up like my man and me (oooh)
Whoa, my man and me
Whoa, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when loving is all there is (oooh)
No, yeah aaah aaah aaah

Young hearts, run free...

Overall Meaning

In "Young Hearts Run Free," by Nancy Wallace, the lyrics speak about the delicate balance between holding onto love and maintaining one’s own independence. The first verse sets the scene of a woman who is unhappy being stuck in a loveless union where she feels neglected and left on the sidelines while the man in her life pursues other women. Although she wants out, she can't seem to leave the situation despite the constant urge. The chorus, "Young hearts, run free," encourages the listener to stay true to themselves and their passions while also being present for the ones they love. The song encourages young people to embrace their youth and avoid the heartbreak that comes with compromising oneself for a lover.

The second verse is about not allowing oneself to be controlled by current circumstances. The singer has been stuck in her current predicament for too long, and no longer wants to be beholden to anyone else. The line, "My mind must be free to learn all I can about me," suggests a desire for independence and self-discovery. The reference to "self-resevation" points to the need for people to prioritize their own emotional and mental health above all else. The last chorus encourages people not to be naive in love, to be true to oneself, and to live free from the constraints of a broken heart.

Enjoyed the video production. This seems to be the last work with Nancy in it. I really hope she hasn't packed it in. Mind you, the music industry today is a meat grinder. Yes, At least you can promote yourself and side step the major label's gate keepers but there in lies the rub. Everyone (including Zero talent) is trying to promote themselves and struggling to be heard above the commercial din. Contrary to popular notion that only the cream rises to the top is the fact that I've shared public venues with extremely talented musician's who dropped out because life got in the way. Earning a living, raising a family and other serious concerns have stifled many a budding artists career. We all enjoy it for the pleasure we derive from music and sharing of it with others. I guess the trick is to keep banging away and enjoy the ride. As Woody Allen once said: "80% of success, is just showing up". Good luck all.
