Spinning Wheel
Nancy Wilson攀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What goes up must come down
Spinning Wheel got to go 'round
Talkin' 'bout your troubles
It's a cryin' sin
Ride a painted pony
Let the Spinning Wheel spin
You got no money, you got no home
Spinning Wheel all alone
Talkin' 'bout your troubles and you
You never learn
Ride a painted pony
Let the Spinning Wheel turn
Did you find your directing sign
On the straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign?
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real
Someone is waiting just for you

Spinning Wheel spinning true
Drop all you troubles by the river side

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Nancy Wilson's "Spinning Wheel" tell of the inevitability of life's ups and downs. The chorus notes that "what goes up must come down" and acknowledges the cyclical nature of life, as represented by the spinning wheel. The song suggests that when life gets tough and you're "talkin' 'bout your troubles," it's best to let go and "ride a painted pony," essentially letting the spinning wheel of life take its course. The repeated phrase "let the spinning wheel spin" seems to encourage acceptance of the inevitable ups and downs, as well as an openness to new experiences.

The song also delves into the idea of finding direction in life. Wilson asks the listener if they've found their "directing sign" and suggests that a "reflecting sign" can help to show "the colors that are real." This idea of self-reflection and introspection is woven throughout the song, encouraging the listener to let go of their troubles and embrace new possibilities. The final line of the song, "drop all your troubles by the riverside" seems to be a call to action, a directive to let go of the past and embrace the present.

I was 11 years old when this song came out. I'm 63 now, I survived colon cancer and Covid 19. When I will be gone, this song will still be carrying on and on and on. Great song, God knows how I miss the 60s and the 70s.

Congrats on beating colon cancer. I've been stage 4 cancer for just over 3-years but am feeling good for the most part. [I might beat it.] What would we do without YouTube, every hit from the past is at our fingertips. Peace brother.
