She trained as a classical singer with the Helen Hayes Young People's Theater Guild before building a career on the US folk circuit during the 1960s as a singer-songwriter.
In the late 1970s, during a pop recording session of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" at Columbia Recording Studios, an engineer, who had worked with many of Columbia's notable jazz artists, told Nanette that she "had the soul of a jazz singer." She described the moment as a turning point in her musical life.
"When I fell into jazz singing, I was hooked and challenged by its complexities and I put down my guitar and never looked back".
She continues to record and perform, as well as teach, jazz in New York.

Things are gonna get easier
Ooh child
Things'll get brighter
Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter
Ooh child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh child
Things'll be brighter
Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter
