When she was twelve, her father gave her a guitar since he was worried about her being shy. Popular musician and composer Patricio Teixeira and classical guitarist Solon Ayala were her teachers. While still a teenager, she met a number of singers and composers who took part of Bossa Nova's musical revolution, in late 50s and early 60s, including Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra, Ronaldo Bôscoli, João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim.
By 1963, after singing as an amateur for a few years, she became a professional and toured with Sergio Mendes. In the mid-1960s, the institution of military dictatorship in Brazil led her to sing increasingly political lyrics. Her show "Opinião" reflected her political beliefs and she had largely switched to political music by this point. In 1964, she even spoke against bossa nova as a movement, calling it "alienating". In 1968, being part of the Tropicália movement, she appeared on the album Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses, performing "Lindonéia."
She later left Brazil for Paris and in the 1970s abandoned music to focus on her family. She returned to music later and when she discovered, in 1979, that she had an inoperable brain tumor she increased her productivity as much as possible. She died in 1989, leaving a great legacy behind her succesful years of career.

Nara Leão Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nós nos amarmos,
Nós entregarmos,
Neste momento tudo lá fora deixar ficar.
Eu te proponho
Te dar meu corpo
Depois do amor o meu conforto
Te dar a minha paz.
Eu te proponho
Na madrugada
Você cansada
Te dar meu braço
E no meu abraço fazer você dormir.
Eu te proponho
Não dizer nada
Seguirmos juntos a mesma estrada
Que continua
Depois do amor no amanhecer.
Eu te proponho
Não dizer nada
Seguirmos juntos a mesma estrada
Que continua
Depois do amor no amanhecer.
The song "Proposta" by Nara Leão is a beautiful love song that talks about a proposal of love and commitment to another person. The singer proposes to her lover that they should love and surrender to each other in the present moment, forgetting everything else that's happening outside. She then goes on to express her willingness to offer her body, her comfort, and her peace to her lover after lovemaking. She promises to be there for her partner, to offer her arm when she's tired, and to make her fall asleep in her embrace. The singer then suggests that they should continue their journey together after love, without saying anything but feeling the connection that they share.
The song has a romantic tone and a simple melody that enhances the lyrics' emotions, making it one of the most popular Brazilian love songs. The words used in the lyrics are straightforward but meaningful, expressing deep love, commitment, and care. The singer's proposal is not only about physical intimacy but about the promise of companionship and emotional strength in love. The song also highlights the idea of surrendering oneself to love completely, without hesitation or doubt.
