Garota De Ipanema

This song, Garota de Ipanema, which translates to “The Girl from Ipanema” in English, is one of the most iconic Brazilian songs of all time. Originally written in 1962 by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the song tells the story of a young girl from the Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, who passes by the singer and leaves him enchanted. The song is performed by a variety of artists, but the most famous version is likely by João Gilberto and singer Astrud Gilberto (no relation) with Stan Getz on saxophone, which won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965.
The lyrics themselves are deceptively simple, but the melody and rhythm of the song are what truly captivate the listener. The opening lines “Olha que coisa mais linda/Mais cheia de graça” (Look what a beautiful thing/Full of grace) set the tone and describe the girl as she walks by, swaying in a “sweet swing” on her way to the sea. The singer is struck by her beauty and her movements, comparing her to a poem.
The second half of the song takes a more melancholy turn, with the singer wondering why everything is so sad and why he is so alone. He reflects on the beauty and grace of the girl and how it affects the world around them, making everything more beautiful “because of love”. The song is a poignant ode to beauty, longing, and the fleetingness of youth.

Manhã, tão bonita manhã
Na vida, uma nova canção
Cantando só teus olhos
Teu riso, tuas mãos
Pois há de haver um dia
Em que virás
Das cordas do meu violão
Que só teu amor procurou
Vem uma voz
Falar dos beijos perdidos
Nos lábios teus
Canta o meu coração
Alegria voltou
Tão feliz a manhã
Deste amor
