Overall Meaning

In "I Want To Talk To You," Nas calls out powerful figures in the government, including the mayor, governor, president, FBI, CIA and congressman. He demands to be heard by these people, alleging that he is their kin in the sense that they represent him and other Black Americans, who face oppression and discrimination. Nas references police brutality against Black people, specifically mentioning the murder of a young girl in San Francisco. He also alludes to government secrets and conspiracy theories, mentioning the Pentagon's supposed origins in Egypt and a computer shutdown. He argues that Black and Latinx individuals face disproportionate incarceration rates, and calls for unity among marginalized groups.

The song was featured on Nas's album Nastradamus, which was released in 1999. "I Want To Talk To You" was produced by Ill Will Fulton and LES. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Nas explained that he wrote the album after being inspired by a trip to Africa, where he witnessed corrupt leaders and impoverished communities. He said, "Africa opened my eyes to a lot of things. It made me want to come back and make some music that mattered."
