Project Roach
Nas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It is absolutely silly and unproductive to have a funeral for the word nigga
When the actions continue we need to have a movement to resurrect brothers and sisters
Not a funeral for niggas
'Cause niggas don't die

Uh yeah yo I'm creepy and crawling
In your sink or your toilet
I'll be drinking from your spit
Anything cause I'm more less an insect with 4 legs
People come and I fake dead
Correction I got 8 legs
Climbin' on top your plate bed
Wherever I smell food
It could even jail food
Stale food that's molded
A roach is what I am fool
The ghetto is my land fool
I'm a never be able to fly like a bumblebee
Try not to be underneath
Your sneaker
Pitiful creature
I'm not afraid of your pesticide
Or ray
'Cause in heavens my creator
I love it when the lights off
Eating from same knives forks
From any mans dinner
See my antennas
You can't win
You can't stand the crunchy sound I make if you squash me
Learn to live with me
How much your roast motel costing
You and the city
But yo we everywhere
Check your house I bet we there, look

Niggas are like roaches, they are never going away

Learn from them what we should not become
'Cause niggas don't die

Overall Meaning

In "Project Roach," Nas brings to light the plight of African Americans, comparing them to roaches who have adapted to their environment in the ghettos of New York City. The first verse mentions the funeral of the word "nigga," which has been used as a derogatory term for African Americans for centuries. Nas is suggesting that instead of having a funeral for the word, there should be a movement to resurrect brothers and sisters who have been oppressed for far too long. He points out that despite the hardships, African Americans are resilient, much like roaches, who thrive in unforgiving environments. The concept of roaches is personified in the second verse, where Nas takes on the persona of a roach, describing how it is creepy and crawly, living off of stale and molded food, and taking over wherever it smells food. He also highlights how roaches are not afraid of the pesticides used to kill them, just like African Americans who face institutional racism and discrimination every day. Nas concludes that by learning from the mistakes of others (niggas), we can grow and become better than them.
