The series stars Connie Britton as Rayna Jaymes, a legendary country music superstar, whose stardom begins fading. Her producers offer her a joint tour with the up-and-comer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), the young and sexy future of country music. But both singers are pursuing their goals. Juliette wants to take the place of Rayna. Rayna thinks that a few songs written by talented author Scarlett O'Connor (Clare Bowen) will help to revive her success. Rayna's father is Lamar Wyatt (Powers Boothe), a powerful politician in Nashville, who forced her to marry Teddy Conrad (Eric Close), who lives on her money.

A confident is an enemy
the lines you cross
helplessly I can only watch
imagine words as they ricochet
honesty that will never pay
your convictions I believe
Now the truth is a ball
and chain holding my conscious to the flame
covered up but still i know
the secret of a life you’re guilty of
the smoking gun is what I found
the dirt I have on you is the ground
Oh, I’m buried under
Try to tread through sink and sand,
In your way, you know i can´t stand
What I thought was meant to be,
Is a broken heart weighing over me
The truth is a ball and chain
Holdin´ my conscious to the flame
Covered up but still i know
The secret of a life you´re guilty of
The smoking gun is what I found
The dirt I have on you is the ground
I´m buried under
Yeah, I´m buried under
Oh, I´m buried under
Can you fall for the wing of a dove,
when the clever wolf is the one you love
Now the truth is a ball and chain
Holdin´ my conscious to the flame
Covered up but still i know
The secret of a life you´re guilty of
The smoking gun is what I found
The dirt I have on you is the ground
I´m buried under
Oh, I´m buried under
Wish that i didn´t have to see
A confident as an enemy
The song "Buried Under" by the Nashville Cast talks about the feeling of being trapped under the weight of someone else's lies and secrets. The first verse sets the scene, with the singer wishing they didn't have to face someone so confident, as it makes them an enemy. The second verse builds on this feeling, describing the way that someone else's lies can ricochet around and never lead to any honesty or payment. The singer believes in the convictions of this person, but they feel haunted by them like an apparition.
The chorus repeats the idea that the truth is a ball and chain, holding the singer's conscious to a flame. Although the secrets are covered up, the singer knows what they are guilty of and has evidence in the form of a smoking gun and dirt on them. They feel buried under the weight of these secrets and lies. The bridge offers a glimmer of hope but ultimately recognizes the difficulty in trusting someone who has already shown themselves to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. The final chorus repeats the earlier sentiment, emphasizing the sense of being buried under the weight of these secrets.
