Let There Be Love
Nat "King" Cole feat. George Shearing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let there be you, let there be me
Let there be oysters under the sea
Let there be wind, an occasional rain
Chile con care, sparkling champagne

Let there be birds to sing in the trees
Someone to bless me whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
But first of all, please let there be love

Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove

But first of all, please let there be love
Love, love, let there be love

Overall Meaning

The song Let There Be Love by Nat "King" Cole featuring George Shearing talks about the singer's desire for the presence of love in his life. The lyrics start with a wish for the singer and his partner's happiness, "Let there be you, let there be me," speaking about the necessity of a loving relationship. The next line, "Let there be oysters under the sea," is an allusion to the extravagance and luxury that love can bring, represented by the expensive aphrodisiac of oysters. The line "Let there be wind, an occasional rain" represents the ups and downs of life and how love can make those times more tolerable. The food references to Chile con care and sparkling champagne, likewise, represent the wonderful experiences that love can bring.

The next stanza in the song, "Let there be birds to sing in the trees, someone to bless me whenever I sneeze," speaks about how love can bring blessings and happiness to individuals. The singer expresses his desire for the presence of natural beauty around him and alludes to the symbolism of the different birds. The final line in this stanza is a light-hearted nod to the simple joys of life that become cherished moments when shared with someone dear. Finally, the song repeats the line "But first of all, please let there be love" twice, emphasizing the importance and power of love above everything else.

What a great pairing. Just superb. The velvety voice of Nat King Cole and the elegant playing of George Shearing.

@althejazz

As well as being a great singer Nat Cole was also a great pianist too. It would have been the icing on the cake to have these two playing piano together.
