Too Young
Nat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They try to tell us we're too young
Too young to really be in love
They say that love's a word
A word we've only heard
But can't begin to know the meaning of

And yet we're not too young to know
This love will last though years may go
And then some day they may recall
We were not too young at all

And yet we're not too young to know
This love will last though years may go

And then some day they may recall
We were not too young at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nat King Cole's song Too Young talk about the idea that the singer is too young to be in love. Others tell them that they have only heard the word love and can't know its meaning yet. But the singer believes that they are not too young to feel love, and it will last despite the passing years. The last verse about how someday they will remember that they weren't too young at all conveys that the singer is confident in their feelings and the longevity of their relationship.

The lyrics seem to reflect the experience of many young couples in love. Despite skepticism from older generations, the youthful passion and connection the couple feels is real and can withstand the test of time. The song suggests that the idea of being "too young" is subjective and perhaps arbitrary. The singer is self-assured and trusts their own emotions.

My Dad passed away a couple of hours ago. He loved singing this song to my Mom. When he passed he was listening to this song with one ear Bud in his ear and the other in my Mom’s ear. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary in November. I know he is now at peace.❤️✝️

My Dad used to sing this too. I thought of it tonight, all those years ago. Feeling very sentimental, I came to hear Nat sing it.

I was 13 in 1953 and my husband was 16. The community pool was two blocks from my house. Richard was a lifeguard and I would go and twirl around in the water and look at him with stars in my eyes. To him, I was just a pesky kid BUT we started dating occasionally when I was 17. We were married in June 1959 and celebrated 63 years of marriage this year. He is 85 and I am 82, and because he is seriously ill, we may not see our 64th anniversary. It's been wonderful to share this journey that we call life together ❤️. Nat King Cole and Perry Como are our favorite singers of all time!

This song was my late Mom and Dad's love (theme) song because they were "too young" to fall in love with each other. They were married 50 years (living) and passed away for 13 years now. Yet, each time I hear this song, it reminds me of how long they turned their trials and battles into triumphs for over 50 years! Thank you for sharing this song.

@hyeguy36

One of the finest singers of all time. Nobody today has the voice quality that Nat possessed. Cole was one of the first African Americans to host a television variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death from lung cancer in February 1965.

and the poor guy was literally taxed and over-taxed to death and beyond...he was a National Treasure.
