China Gate
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

China Gate, China Gate
Many dreams, and many heart
You separate like two arms open wide
Some you welcome in and some must stay outside

Blow of rice, bitter tea
Is this all the good earth has to offer me?
Will I find peace of mind?
Does my true love wait behind the China Gate?

Will I find peace of mind?
Does my true love wait behind the China Gate?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nat King Cole's song "China Gate" tell a tale of a man who feels separated from the rest of the world by the gate of China. He voices his distress by asking whether he will ever find true love or peace of mind while standing outside this gate. The lyrics symbolically represent the notion of being barred from something loved, as if finding true love or inner peace is only possible if you are allowed to cross the threshold.

The bitterness of tea and the bowl of rice suggest the emptiness of material possessions that leaves him unfulfilled. They show that despite the luxuries, monetization, and so-called benefits in life, he is still unable to find his path. Nat King Cole’s use of color symbolism with the China Gate is remarkable. In China and some other cultures, the "red door" as mentioned by Cole was often painted red to symbolize prosperity, luck, and joy, but the red color was also used in China to repel evil spirits.

One of the loveliest film title songs of the 1950s, sung by the superb Nat King Cole, who also starred in the film, a 20th Century-Fox release in CinemaScope, released in 1957. Ten years later, Ramsey Lewis recorded a single of this theme, but, although it started off well, the second half of it was a bit too jazzed up.
