My Dream Sonata
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My dream sonata is the music I hear
Each night when all the world is deep in slumber
And in my dreams, my darling, you appear.
While the music's playing I hear you say,
"I love you, I love you."

My dream sonata has the beauty of prayer,
A prayer my lonely heart has set to music,
That when I wake, my darling, you'll be there.
But when I awaken, you're gone, it seems.
Like my sonata, you are only in my dreams.

My dream sonata has the beauty of prayer,
A prayer my lonely heart has set to music,
That when I wake, my darling, you'll be there.

But when I awaken, you're gone, it seems.
Like my sonata, you are only in my dreams.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nat King Cole's "My Dream Sonata" convey a bittersweet yearning for a loved one who is always present in the singer's dreams, but absent upon waking. The title itself suggests a musical composition, and the song's images imply a melody that is hauntingly beautiful, much like the experience of being with someone you love but cannot be with. The dream sonata can be seen as a metaphor for the singer's heart, where the loved one resides, but can only be reached in dreams.

The first verse describes the music that the singer hears in his dreams, while the second verse expresses the hope that the dream will become real when he wakes up. However, in the end, the dream and the sonata are both flights of fancy, and the singer's beloved remains out of reach.

Musically, "My Dream Sonata" features soft, gentle piano playing that complements the romantic mood of the lyrics. The song is a beautiful example of Nat King Cole's mellow style, and it conveys the universal feeling of holding onto the memory of someone you can't be with.
