Once In A While
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once in a while will you try to give
One little thought to me
Though someone else may be
Nearer your heart?

Once in a while will you dream
Of the moments I shared with you
Moments before we two
Drifted apart?

In love's smoldering ember
One spark may remain
If love still can remember
That spark may burn again

I know that I'll be contented
With yesterday's memory
Knowing you think of me
Once in a while

In love's smoldering ember
One spark may remain
If love still can remember
The spark may burn again

I know that I'll be contented
With yesterday's memory

Knowing you think of me
Once in a while

Overall Meaning

Nat King Cole's song "Once in a While" is a melancholic tune about a former love reflecting on a past relationship. The lyrics request that the former lover remembers and thinks of the singer "once in a while". The lyrics imply that time has passed, and although the singer still feels love, they can now only be content with memories of the past.

The first two verses of the song ask if the former lover ever thinks of the singer, even though they may be with someone else. The lyrics hint that there may still be a spark between them, and maybe the love could reignite again. However, the third stanza of the song suggests that it is unlikely that the flames of the past love will come back to life. The lyrics make a concession that the singer will be content with the memories of the past, and the occasional thought from their former lover.

The opening line of the song, "Once in a While will you try to give one little thought to me," was also the title of Nat King Cole’s autobiography. The song was written by Michael Edwards and Bud Green and was originally recorded by Tommy Dorsey in 1937. Nat King Cole's version of the song was released in 1957 and was included in a re-release of his hit album "Love Is the Thing." The song became one of Cole's signature songs.
