There Will Never Be Another You
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is our last dance together
Tonight soon will be long ago
And in our moment of parting
This is all I want you to know

There will be many other nights like this
And I'll be standing here with someone new
There will be other songs to sing
Another fall, another spring
But there will never be another you

There will be other lips that I may kiss
But they won't thrill me
Like yours used to do
Yes, I may dream a million dreams
But how can they come true
If there will never, ever be another you?

Yes, I may dream a million dreams
But how can they come true

If there will never, ever be
Another you?

Overall Meaning

In “There Will Never Be Another You,” Nat King Cole sings about the inevitability of change and the transience of life. The first verse establishes that this evening is a farewell dance, and that the time for parting is swiftly approaching. Cole then shares his feelings with his partner, stating that he knows there will be more nights like this, but that there will never be another person like them.

The chorus reinforces this idea - Cole acknowledges that he will have other experiences and meet other people, but that no one will ever be able to replace his current partner. This sentiment is also expressed in the second verse: he may kiss other lips, but they will never have the same effect that his partner’s did. Cole then expresses his desire to dream and look to the future, but laments that his dreams can never truly be realized if his partner is not there to share them with.

Overall, “There Will Never Be Another You” is a song about the bittersweet nature of change and the importance of cherishing the moments that we have with the people we love.

He was a prolific jazz pianist, and he had a beautfiul, charming voice. Two great gifts, combined in one talented person. Such a pity his life was so short. :-(

@Kenny Testa the jazz standard formula is a thing of the past and because it’s so outdated anyone that tries to do it now gets labeled as such. What i meant by my comment was wishing that this kind of jazz could become mainstream again so that it might be explored without limits and pushed further than it got to. 9 year old comment lol

I love it. This song is so sweet but it makes me so sad. I could just sit out on the beach listening to this any many more classics like this, just lose myself in the night & the rhythm of the jazzy blues...

I cannot listen to Nat Cole's enchanting vocals without wondering how long he might have been with us had it not been for the cigarette habit that ultimately stilled his voice and took him so early from our midst.
