Let There Be Love
Nat King Cole & George Shearing Quintet Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let there be oysters under the sea
Let there be wind and occasional rain
Chilli con carne and sparkling champagne
Let there be birds to sing in the trees
Someone to bless me, whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
But first of all please, let there be love
Umm, love, ooh, love, let there be love
Nat King Cole's song "Let There Be Love" is a beautifully written ballad that calls for love and depicts the beauty of life. The lyrics urge for the existence of not just oneself but another person, as represented by the lines "Let there be you, let there be me." The lyrics emphasize that there should be a variety of experiences present in life, for instance, "Let there be oysters under the sea," "Let there be wind and occasional rain," and "Chilli con carne and sparkling champagne," which indicates that the author yearns for luxury items.
The lyrics further illustrate the presence of nature by calling for "birds to sing in the trees," which signifies the need for positivity and happiness in life. The author continues to ask for goodwill in life by saying "Someone to bless me, whenever I sneeze," which shows the need for someone to support them in times of problems. Finally, the author notes the necessities of the presence of "cuckoos, a lark, and a dove" but highlights the importance of love in life, which is the foundation of any good relationship. The song ends with the repeated phrase "let there be love," reinforcing that love is the essential factor that contributes to a happy life.

As well as being a great singer Nat Cole was also a great pianist too. It would have been the icing on the cake to have these two playing piano together.
