Let There Be Love
Nat king Cole And George Shearing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let there be you, let there be me
Let there be oysters under the sea
Let there be wind and occasional rain
Chilli con carne and sparkling champagne

Let there be birds to sing in the trees
Someone to bless me, whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
But first of all please, let there be love

Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove

But first of all please, let there be love
Umm, love, ooh, love, let there be love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nat King Cole and George Shearing's song "Let There Be Love" paint a vivid picture of the world we inhabit, all while asking for the most important thing: love. The song begins with a simple request for the presence of two people, "let there be you, let there be me." The next lines talk about the varying elements that make life beautiful - oysters, wind, occasional rain, chilli con carne, sparkling champagne. All these things are part of the richness and diversity of life, but love trumps them all.

As the song progresses, we see the importance of other aspects of life - birds that sing, blessings when someone sneezes - but again, love is the most vital ingredient. The final two stanzas call for the presence of birds such as cuckoos, larks and doves and then proceeds to emphasize again how important it is that love is present in one's life.

"Let There Be Love" showcases the power of love and how it should be at the center of all that we do in life. It sends a message that all other things can come and go, but love should be constant, permanent and unchanging.

Let there be you,
Let there be me.
Let there be oysters
Under the sea.

Let there be wind,
An occasional rain.
Chile con carne,
Sparkling champagne

Let there be birds
To sing in the trees,
Someone to bless me
Whenever I sneeze.

Let there be cuckoos,
A lark and a dove,
But first of all, please
Let there be love.

[Interlude]

Let there be cuckoos,
A lark and a dove,
But first of all, please
Let there be love...

Hmmm umm...love

Had this album during my last 3 years of college. With extreme insomnia, I used this album to fall asleep at night.

What a great pairing. Just superb. The velvety voice of Nat King Cole and the elegant playing of George Shearing.

@althejazz

As well as being a great singer Nat Cole was also a great pianist too. It would have been the icing on the cake to have these two playing piano together.
