Big Mistake
Natalie Imbruglia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's no sign on the gate
and there's mud on your face
Don't ya think it's time we re-investigate this situation?
Put some fruit on your plate
You've forgotten how it started.
Close your eyes
think of all the bubbles of love we made,
and you're down on your knees
it's too late.
Oh don't come crawlin'
and you lie by my feet.
what a big mistake.
I see you fallin'
got a buzz in my head
and my flowers are dead.
Can't figure out a way to rectify this situation.
I don't believe what you said
you forgotten how it started
Close your eyes
think of all the bubbles of love we made
and you're down on your knees
it's too late.
Oh don't come crawlin'
and you lie by my feet.
what a big mistake.
I see you fallin'
I could sting like a bee.
Careful how you treat me
baby I don't think I'll accept your sorry invitation.
Close the door as you leave
and you cry over me.
I can't wait.
I feel you stallin'
and you try to reach me.
What a big mistake.

I hear you calling.
(Chorus)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Natalie Imbruglia's "Big Mistake" seemingly tell a story of a failed relationship. The first stanza describes the current state of the relationship as muddy and signaling the need for re-evaluation. The suggestion is made to put some fruit on your plate as a possible solution, implying a need for nurturing or an added sweetness to the relationship. The second stanza references past good times and the creation of "bubbles of love", but also implies regret and an acknowledgment of being too late to fix things. The third and final stanza suggests the relationship is irreparable, with the singer warning the other person to be careful how they treat her because she could "sting like a bee". The song ends with the other person calling out to the singer, but it is unclear if the singer will respond.

Overall, "Big Mistake" seems to convey a sense of sorrow and disillusionment within a failed relationship. The imagery of mud and dead flowers, along with the warning of a "sting", creates a sense of negativity and finality. The use of "bubbles of love" also suggests a sense of fragility and temporary nature to the relationship, highlighting the sadness of it ending.

Very nostalgic. Overall mood and the atmosphere of the 90s is the best. Personally think 80~early 00 was the best time.

Charlie Chaz

Still blows me away how the little sweetheart on Neighbours was hiding such a ferocious talent and incredible voice. Absolutely love her

TheTuneful

Such a good song from a great album. It's a pity commercial radio stations in the UK only ever play 'Torn'. Don't they know she released other songs too?????

Philip Graves

They should do as 'Big Mistake' was a No. 2 hit in the UK, just like 'Torn'. This said, 'Torn' stuck around in the charts for months and sold close to a million copies, while 'Big Mistake' was a flash-in-the-pan success - only spent two weeks in the Top 10 of which one at No. 2 and one at No. 6.

Commercial radio stations tend to play it safe and go for the favourites of the crowds, though, don't they? 'Big Mistake' is artistically outstanding, but little remembered these days probably, unless you were around in 1998 and paying attention.

Reeceline

How funny I always wondered why this track didnt get as much attention. I think its better than torn.
