Diving in the Deep End
Natalie Imbruglia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why should it be,
Someone like me could make the same mistakes again.
Haven't I learned,
People get hurt,
When they go diving in the deep end
In the deep end,
In the deep end,
In the deep end.
Thought I was smart,
Controlling the art, of turning off my intuition
Haven't I seen, since I was fourteen.
That life is all just repitition
You lose or you win,
You sink or you swim,
When you go diving in the deep end,
In the deep end,
In the deep end,
In the deep end.
Now it's time to realise,
You don't have to agonise
You don't have to compromise
But the one thing you must do
Is open your eyes
Your eyes,
Your eyes.
Why should it be,
Someone like me could make the same mistakes again.
Haven't I learned,
People get hurt,

When they go diving,
Diving, diving (fade).

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Natalie Imbruglia's song "Diving in the Deep End" talks about making the same mistakes repeatedly and getting hurt in the process. The song's narrator questions why they keep making the same mistakes hoping to avoid hurting themselves, but it never works out that way. They mention that they believed they were smart enough to turn off their intuition and control their emotions, but deep down, they knew that life is all about repetition, and it's either win or lose, sink or swim.

The phrase "diving in the deep end" is used as a metaphor for taking risks and being impulsive without first considering the consequences. The singer recognizes that it's time for them to open their eyes and stop agonizing and compromising, but instead, they should be aware of the situation and try to avoid the same mistakes again.

Another example of a b-side being better than the actual single. Still a beautiful song.

From what I know this song was included on an Australian exclusive edition CD of her debut album that's why it's not on streaming. I found this song as the b-side of the Torn CD single and...this is literally amazing should've been on all the editions of the album🥲
