However, that wasn’t the first time Natalie followed such an impulse. Born to Surinamese parents and raised in Amsterdam, she moved to Los Angeles alone at 20-years-old, pursuing her dream of becoming a singer and dancer. Inspired by everyone from Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson to Mariah Carey, she honed her vocal chops through years of diligent practice. That prowess led to a deal with Blackground Records/Interscope Records for her duo Amsterdam in 2010.
“The group didn’t work out, and no music was released,” she sighs. “It just wasn’t the right time. However, with Flo, everything felt right. We have such a great chemistry, and he’s given me an incredible launch pad for me and my songs.”
That music flaunts her immense voice with flourishes of both eighties and nineties R&B. It’s an instantly irresistible style. “I’m very inspired by pop and rhythm,” she goes on. “There’s a soulfulness and great groove though. Since I’m a dancer, it’s important for my music to have a nice beat.”
Her debut single for I.M.G./Republic Records “Somebody” [featuring Jeremih] will undoubtedly get the dance floor moving. Over smooth production from Future Classic, the song updates the melody from Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” for a new millennium. Natalie’s voice takes the spotlight in between a sexy hook from Jeremih.
“It’s a fun and funky song,” remarks Natalie. “It’s feel-good, and it reminds me of summertime. I love to be around people, have a great time, and dance. That’s what it stands for. While we were recording Jeremih happened to be in Miami for a Big Dreams for Kids Back to School Event and Flo invited him to the studio to sing on it. He nailed it on the first take!”
Ultimately though, “Somebody” simply opens the doorway for Natalie. “If you want something, you have to fight for it,” she leaves off. “That’s what I did. I want to show everybody living your dream is possible. I want to leave people with smiles on their faces, inspire them, and move them.”
Tables
Natalie La Rose Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Said I was the one but he led me on
Thought he was slick but it don't mean shit
Know I ain't the one to be playing with
I'll make you miss this
Thinking that it's something you get right back
I see you switching
You are on and off like an outlet
I got too many waiting to take your place
Somebody who can show me right
And never wanna leave my side
Somebody doing what you couldn't do
Now don't be mad that he ain't you
I just woke up and my man ain't home
Said I was the one but he led me on
Thought he was slick but it don't mean shit
Know I ain't the one you can play with
Tables are turning
Kissing and learning
Maybe it's worth it
Kissing and learning
Said you were different
You knew all along you're a lie lie
I caught you slipping
Is it really worth it when you see me
With a fly guy
I wasted so much time on you, but what for
I got too many out here knocking on my door
I know that they can show me right
And never wanna leave my side
Somebody doing what you couldn't do
Now don't be mad that he ain't you
I just woke up and my man ain't home
Said I was the one but he led me on
Thought he was slick but it doesn't mean shit
Know I ain't the one you can play with
Tables are turning
Kissing and learning
Maybe it's worth it
Kissing and learning
I just woke up and my man ain't home
Said I was the one but he led me on
Thought he was slick but it doesn't mean shit
Know I ain't the one you can play with
Tables are turning
Kissing and learning
Maybe it's worth it
Kissing and learning
In this song, Natalie La Rose sings about discovering her partner's infidelity. She wakes up to find that her man isn't at home, and she realizes that he has been leading her on. She acknowledges that he may have thought he was being clever, but it doesn't mean anything to her. Natalie asserts her self-worth and makes it clear that she won't tolerate being played with. She confidently declares that she can make him miss her and that she knows there are others who can treat her right and never want to leave her side.
The chorus emphasizes the theme of reversal or karma when she sings, "Tables are turning, kissing and learning, maybe it's worth it." Here, she suggests that the roles have reversed, and now he is the one who will experience the consequences of his actions. The line "tables are turning" symbolizes that the power dynamics in the relationship have shifted, and the person who was once playing games is now on the receiving end. She mentions that she caught him slipping and questions whether his actions were worth it when he sees her with someone better.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of empowerment and confidence, as Natalie La Rose realizes her own value and refuses to be manipulated or played with. She asserts that she deserves someone who will treat her right and won't lead her on.
