It’s astounding how Maria essentially goes through all 5 stages of grief in this scene.

1. Denial (“then we’ll get away…yes, we can, yes, we will…”)
2. Anger (“you all killed him”)
3. Bargaining (“and still have 1 bullet left for me”)
4. Depression (the breakdown to sobbing)
5. Acceptance (“te adoro, Anton”)

And Natalie Wood nails every beat.

I just watched the remake and it was good but this ending really hits you. The whole gangs being here and Maria's speech with them singing somewhere makes it great. Especially the way Natalie Wood gets exhausted of their hate at 3:46 is heartbreaking.

One died with love, the other lives with hatred.

That is more tragic than the fate of Romeo & Juliet.

😢💔

I didn’t read the play. But I don’t care about spoilers. How are their fates exactly?

@Adrian Nicolini They both die, basically.

Maria: Loving is enough

Tony: Not here. They won’t let us be.

That line breaks me every time I see this scene.
