Great Big Storm
Nate Ruess Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Because we're
Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own
Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

I've been lost in this maze
Losing love, losing friends
Losing faith in chemicals
Afraid one day you'll find me
Asleep above the stars
I watch my mother cry
Father Time is catching up
I keep the phone by my side
Afraid she'll wake me up to catch the next flight
In time to say goodbye

But sometimes I fall asleep at night
To the TV light and it sings
Oh ooo whoa oh
One day the sun will break into the room

Because we're holding our own in a great big storm
And though we're cutting it close
We won't let go
Oh no I can't believe
Everything falling down around me
But now we're holding our own
And won't let go
Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own
Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

Broken hearts broken homes and broken bones
Secret love let me go
You know I gotta find my own way
Through mistakes that I can't change
Because there's beauty in every sin
Every single black eye
Has some blue like the moon just before the sun shines
No I don't believe in all the things that they preach

But sometimes I fall asleep at night
And I just know you're smiling at me
Oh ooo whoa oh
One day I'm gonna make this up to you

Because we're holding our own in a great big storm
And though we're cutting it close
We won't let go
Oh no I can't believe
Everything falling down around me
But now we're holding our own
And won't let go
Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own
Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

I can't stand myself
And all the curse words that fall from my mouth
I can't stand myself
Or my legs as they run from the ones here to help
But I just woke up with you next to me
Some new air to breathe
And a belief that it's all gonna be alright
I can't stand myself
But it's high time that we gave it a try
And I think I'm gonna finally give myself a new try

Because I'm holding our own in a great big storm
And though we're cutting it close
We won't let go
Oh no I can't believe
Everything falling down around me

But now we're holding our own
And won't let go

Overall Meaning

The song "Great Big Storm" by Nate Ruess is an anthem about overcoming obstacles and persevering even in the toughest of times. The lyrics are about holding one's ground in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. The metaphor of a "great big storm" represents the challenges and difficulties that life throws at us, but it also suggests that storms eventually pass, and we can weather through them by staying strong and united. The idea of holding our own implies a sense of resilience and determination to keep going even when things look bleak.

The opening lines of the song reference the struggles the singer has gone through, including losing love, friends, and faith in chemicals (likely a reference to drugs or alcohol). The fear of being forgotten underlines the sentiment of vulnerability and uncertainty that characterizes the song. However, the chorus turns this sense of helplessness into a moment of empowerment, as the singer declares that "we're holding our own in a great big storm." The repetition of this phrase emphasizes the importance of resilience and determination in times of adversity.

The lyrics also touch on themes of redemption and hope. Even in the darkest hours, there is a belief that things will get better, and the singer aspires to make things right with those who have been hurt by his mistakes. The song acknowledges that life can be messy and complicated, but it also reminds us that we have the strength to overcome anything if we stand together.

I feel lost and have lost my way in life, losing friends and love. Drugs have failed me, and I'm afraid one day I'll die. I watch my mother cry, knowing I'm running out of time, and fear a phone call telling me it's too late.

But sometimes I fall asleep at night To the TV light and it sings Oh ooo whoa oh One day the sun will break into the room
At times, I fall asleep to the TV's glow, accompanied by its soft music. I hope for the sun's light to bring me a brighter future.

I've been through heartbreak, broken homes, and physical pain. I need to let go of a secret love and find my own path, even though I can't undo my past mistakes. But I find beauty in my sins and see hope in a bruise, as the moon carries the promise of the dawn. I don't believe in everything society tells me to.

But sometimes I fall asleep at night And I just know you're smiling at me Oh ooo whoa oh One day I'm gonna make this up to you
Despite my shortcomings, I feel comforted knowing that someone is still there for me, smiling even when I'm asleep. I aim to make it up to them one day.

Because I'm holding our own in a great big storm And though we're cutting it close We won't let go Oh no I can't believe Everything falling down around me But now we're holding our own And won't let go
I'm still standing and holding my ground despite the storm's intensity. Though things seem dire, I won't give up or let go. I'm no longer alone, and together we'll weather the storm.

So happy to share the "Great Big Storm" music video! I've made a bunch of music videos, but this was one of my favorites. We went to Montreal for the weekend and blocked off a really cool street. It was a beautiful day, so we had to bring the rain ourselves. Usually the highlights for me in Montreal are the bagels. However this time I'd have to say it was the incredible people involved in making the video. Whether it was the crew, the extras, or the random college kids I shot gunned a beer with on the street- everyone was so friendly and worked so hard to make this awesome video.
