In 2001, at the age of 19, he launched the band The Format with his longtime best friend, Sam Means. The Format was his first musical endeavor to gain widespread attention. The Format lasted until 2008.

In 2008, Ruess started a new band with Jack Antonoff of Steel Train and Andrew Dost of Anathallo. The band was called fun.. With fun., Ruess won two Grammy Awards in 2013, including Best New Artist and Song of The Year for their hit We Are Young. fun. only released two albums before parting ways in 2014. On June 16, 2015, Ruess released his debut solo album Grand Romantic.

Ruess has also garnered success as a guest vocalist on songs by artists such as P!nk, Eminem, Emile Haynie, and Beach Boy Brian Wilson.

Never heard this song before. Not a big fan of it sonically but I really like it because I know the history of their relationship and I think it so dope that em matured and essentially forgave his mom and now empathizes for her. The lyrics are touching in so many ways. Love seeing people grow.

One of my favourite songs in the world, always makes me cry, it's a shame this video isn't the whole song, because Nate's solo at the end is one of the best parts! It takes a real man to admit he's done things wrong and despite everything he's been through, to thank Debbie for being his mum AND dad because as much as his mum had problems, he appreciates the struggle of a single parent and how hard it is. ❤ I hope one day they will work things out, but I think deep down that simply too much has happened for a relationship to be possible 😢

My brother killed himself when I was little and my mom became an alcoholic. She couldn't cope. I used to get so mad at her and listened to Cleaning Out My Closet on repeat to piss her off. I grew up, I realized what she went through was one of the hardest things a mother could endure and I found myself appreciating her in a new way. She died from the alcoholism, I had to take her off of life support. I kissed her forehead as she died in my arms and all I could hear was this song in my head. I lost my dad last year, he got murdered. I found myself wanting my mama and looking for her strength. She wasn't here but I found that strength because of the love she gave me when she was here. I love you mama. Rest in peace💕
