Come lay your cool hand on my brow
Promise me that you will always be
Nobody's darlin' but mine.
You're as sweet as the flowers of springtime
You're as pure as the dew from the rose
And I'd rather be somebody's darlin'Than a poor boy that nobody knows.
Be nobody's darlin' but mine love
Be honest be faithful be kind
And promise me that you will always be
Nobody's darlin' but mine.
Goodbye, goodbye little darlin'
I'm leaving this cold world behind
So promise me that you will never be
Nobody's darlin' but mine...
The song "Nobody's Darlin' " by Nathan Carter begins with an invitation to the listener to come and lay next to him. He asks the listener to put their cool hand on his brow and make a promise to him that they will always be nobody's darling but his. The lyrics convey a deep sense of love, security, and possessiveness. The idea of being somebody's darling is seen as a preferable alternative to being a poor boy nobody knows.
As the song progresses, the singer pays compliments to the listener. The listener is compared to the sweet flowers of springtime and the pure dew from the rose. These comparisons are effectively used to amplify the beauty of the listener. The idea of being faithful, honest, and kind is then brought up to the listener, and it is asked of them to promise that they will always be nobody's darling but his.
The song ends with a goodbye, as the singer informs the beloved that he is leaving the cold world behind. He then asks for the final promise that the beloved will never be anybody's darling but his.
