All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin, mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy nightSon of God love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus lord at thy birth
Jesus lord at thy birth
Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories streams from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia
Christ the saviour is born
Christ the saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin, mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night
"Silent Night" is a classic Christmas carol that paints a serene and peaceful picture of the night when Jesus was born. The opening lines set the tone for the entire song, highlighting the tranquility and brightness of the night. The imagery of the virgin mother and the tender infant Jesus conveys a sense of purity and innocence, creating a sacred and reverent atmosphere.
As the song progresses, the focus shifts to the divine nature of Jesus as the Son of God, described as "love's pure light." The mention of the "radiant beams" from Jesus' holy face symbolizes his divine presence and the hope he brings with the "dawn of redeeming grace." The repetition of "Jesus, Lord at thy birth" emphasizes the significance of his birth as a pivotal moment in history.
The third verse introduces the shepherds who, in the biblical account, were the first to witness the birth of Jesus. The shepherds' awe and fear at the sight of the heavenly hosts and the glories streaming from afar underscore the miraculous and otherworldly nature of the event. The exultant chorus of "alleluia" sung by the heavenly hosts celebrates the arrival of Christ the savior, emphasizing the joyousness and divinity of the occasion.
The final verses bring the song full circle, echoing the opening lines with a reiteration of the calm and bright atmosphere surrounding the holy family. The repetition of the refrain "Sleep in heavenly peace" reinforces the theme of tranquility and divine blessing that envelops the scene. The overall message of "Silent Night" is one of reverence, awe, and celebration for the birth of Jesus, inviting listeners to reflect on the significance of the event and find solace in the peace and hope it brings.
