I'll Remember
Nathan Hawes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So I'll
pick my keys up and pack my bag let go of my home
say goodbye to the people I love
and the people that give
when my time comes run I'll learn to let you go
when that time is I will go and live on my own

I'll go on my own (yeah)

I'll remember the days went beneath your clothes
I'll remember the people who help me grow
I will build a house on the road
I'll remember your face when my time is alone
time is alone
so I'll pick up my keys head up north where no one to
say that I can't live my life with out a home
when my time comes run I'll learn to let you go
and when that time is i will go and live on my own
I'll go on my own

I'll remember the days went beneath your clothes
I'll remember the people who helped me grow
I will build a house on the road
I'll remeber your face when my time is alone
my time is alone

I won't live in the shadows of the dark
don't let me forget who to thank now
I won't let you down
(no)
I won't live in the shadowns of the dark
don't let me forget who to thank now
and I won't let you down
no I, I won't (I don' know what he said)
I'll remember the days spent beneath your clothes
I'll remember the people who help me grow
I will build a house on the road
I'll remember your face when my time is alone
I'll remember your face when my time is alone
I'll remember your face when my time is alone
and your at home
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
(and your at home, I'm on my own
and your at home, I'm on my own

and your at home, I'm on my own
and your at home, I'm on my own)

Overall Meaning

In Nathan Hawes’s song “I’ll Remember”, the artist is singing about leaving his home and the people he loves behind in order to embark on his own journey. The lines “so I'll pick my keys up and pack my bag let go of my home / say goodbye to the people I love and the people that give” indicate that he’s leaving not because he wants to, but because he has to. He’s aware that this is the right time to go since he mentions “when my time comes”, but he’s not entirely ready to leave as he will “learn to let you go”. The artist is aware that leaving the people who have helped him grow, but he also knows that he needs to build his own life and “live on my own”. Despite the fact that he’s leaving his loved ones behind, he’s still holding onto some memories of them as he sings “I'll remember the days went beneath your clothes / I'll remember the people who helped me grow / I will build a house on the road / I'll remember your face when my time is alone”.

In the last few lines, Hawes is letting his loved ones know that he won’t forget them and won’t let them down. He acknowledges that he may be alone on his journey as he repeats the phrase “I'm on my own”. The repetition of these lines serves as a reminder to the artist himself that he’s made this decision and he needs to stick with it, even when things get tough. Overall, the song is a representation of the paradox of life - the need to leave something behind in order to grow and the struggle of acknowledging that moving forward often means leaving the past behind.

I’d like to thank your friends, your mother, the women in your life, the plants & flowers on the way to wherever you go. The Royal typewriters that really just need a new ribbon, if anything. The art on the walls that you see. Anything and everything that could inspire such a song.

I’ll thank the stars, the earth, the sky for allowing the smooth rhythmic dynamics of soul it takes to write such a beautiful mountain hike of a song. This song helps me mentally and spiritually.
