Long Black Veil
Nathan Stanley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ten years ago on a cold dark night
Someone was killed 'neath the town hall lights
There were few at the scene but they all agreed
That the man who ran looked a lot like me

She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

The judge said, "son, what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else then you won't have to die"
I spoke not a word though it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife

She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

Now the scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But sometimes at night when the cold wind moans
In a long black veil she cries over my bones

She walks these hills in a long black veil
When the cold winds blow and the night winds wail

Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

Overall Meaning

Nathan Stanley’s song “Long Black Veil” tells the story of a man who is wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to death. The singer of the song claims to be innocent, but refuses to offer an alibi that he knows would clear him of the crime – he was with his best friend’s wife. The woman in question remains silent throughout the trial and the execution, grieving secretly and alone.

The lyrics describe the woman’s mourning and secrecy, as well as the singer’s despair at being falsely accused. The mention of the long black veil creates a vivid image of the woman’s mourning attire, as well as hinting at the secretive nature of their affair. The last verse is particularly powerful, as it suggests that the woman only reveals her grief and love for the singer in private, when she visits his grave. The ambiguity of the lyrics leaves us to ponder whether or not the accused man was truly innocent, or if he was complicit in the crime he was accused of.
