Mexico
National Anthem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mexicanos, al grito de guerra
el acero aprestad y el bridón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón!

Ciña ¡oh Patria! tus sienes de oliva
de la paz el arcángel divino,
que en el cielo tu eterno destino
por el dedo de Dios se escribió.
Mas si osare un extraño enemigo
profanar con su planta tu suelo,
piensa ¡oh Patria querida! que el cielo
un soldado en cada hijo te dio.

Mexicanos, al grito de guerra
el acero aprestad y el bridón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón!

¡Guerra, guerra sin tregua al que intente
De la patria manchar los blasones!
¡Guerra, guerra! Los patrios pendones
En las olas de sangre empapad.
¡Guerra, guerra! En el monte, en el valle
Los cañones horrísonos truenen,
Y los ecos sonoros resuenen
Con las voces de ¡Unión! ¡Libertad!

Mexicanos, al grito de guerra
el acero aprestad y el bridón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón!

Antes, patria, que inermes tus hijos
Bajo el yugo su cuello dobleguen,
Tus campiñas con sangre se rieguen,
Sobre sangre se estampe su pie.
Y tus templos, palacios y torres
Se derrumben con hórrido estruendo,
Y sus ruinas existan diciendo:
De mil héroes la patria aquí fue.

Mexicanos, al grito de guerra
el acero aprestad y el bridón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón.
Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra,
al sonoro rugir del cañón!

¡Patria! ¡Patria! Tus hijos te juran
Exhalar en tus aras su aliento,
Si el clarín con su bélico acento
los convoca a lidiar con valor.
¡Para ti las guirnaldas de oliva!
¡Un recuerdo para ellos de gloria!

¡Un laurel para ti de victoria!
¡Un sepulcro para ellos de honor!

Overall Meaning

The Mexican national anthem’s song, ‘Mexico’ is an enthusiastic call to arms for Mexican patriots to defend their land against foreign invaders. The opening lines of the song, “Mexicanos, al grito de guerra” (Mexicans, at the cry of war), set the tone for the entire song. The lyrics encourage the people of Mexico to be prepared for war with their steel swords (‘el acero aprestad’) and their horses (‘el bridón’). The song also talks about the power of the cannon (‘el sonoro rugir del cañón’) and how even the Earth trembles at its sound (‘Y retiemble en sus centros la Tierra’).

The second verse talks about the importance of peace and how Mexico’s destiny has been written in the sky by God’s own finger. It implores Mexico’s people to remember that the heavens have gifted them with a soldier in every son, so they will always have the strength to defend their country. The third verse talks about how Mexico’s enemies will be met with war and there will be no peace until they are defeated. The final verse is a call to sacrifice, where the people of Mexico are willing to spill their blood and destroy their country's buildings to protect their freedom and their homeland.

Mexicans, shout out the cry of war, prepare your sword and horse. Let the Earth shake at its core to the sound of the cannon's roar!

Fatherland, before your unarmed children bow their necks under the yoke, let your countryside watered with blood and your ground stamped with blood. Let your temples, palaces, and towers crumble with a horrifying blast, and their ruins say, 'Here was the homeland of a thousand heroes.'

Fatherland! Fatherland! Your children swear to breathe their last breaths for you. If the trumpet calls them to fight with courage. For you, the olive wreaths! For them, a memory of glory! For you, a laurel of victory! For them, an honorable tomb!

I love my country but at the same time I don't like it, don't get me wrong if we were being invaded I would go fight, but the problems of my country are so deep and systemic that people just don't really care anymore, and I want to leave to find a country where the values I was taught about are actually nurtured and protected, I grew up my whole life (was born in 98) seeing the images of cartel violence.

The injustices of Mexico are many, I was lucky to be born to a good family in a good place, but many many people don't have access to proper education, basic services like running water or electricity, some don't even have access to proper healthcare facilities, yet politicians make their pockets fat with public money instead of helping our people and those try get killed by those sitting in the top of the structures of power.

Being an honest politician is a death sentence because people didn't care enough when it mattered and now there aren't enough people left that care, the level of education and political engagement required to change the nation is not here, and because of those in power it never will be, people vote for politician because they gave them a basic amount of food during their campaigns, and when the politician is elected they forget about the people who elected them yet those same people still proudly defend the candidate they voted for blindly despite being tossed aside after their usefulness ran out, only to steal public money and live like rich people at the public expense.

As tough as your life may be sometimes believe me that it could be worse, you could have been born in rural Mexico where for most the only thing that awaits is a life of generational poverty, or even worse you could be poor in a Mexican City where the cost of living is high yet the minimum wage is unliveable, I have worked minimum wage, and I have applied and look at many job postings and you are expected to work for scraps and to work longer hours than in most European countries and then be thankful and be willing to take whatever bullshit your bosses want to throw at you.

I worked in car sales with a credit company for a while I was not even paid minimum wage for my labour hours, I was paid by commission and I spent a month trying to make sales while not really getting paid anything other than a pittance they have as a pitty salary that was lower than minimum wage, while being pressured to keep working from home and basically extending my work into my own personal time, I had a single day of rest and I had it set aside so I could go to my therapist and I was harassed my boss to keep working and doing stuff even though I was on my Therapist appointment, and when I told him I couldn't, he snapped at me telling me with "You are so dedicated to your work, thanks" even though it was my day off and I was dealing with a previous appointment, I had even spent money on advertising to try to get more traffic and make sales, but it never materialised, when he snapped at me I decided I had enough of that and quit.
