Yeah history is repeating itself, ussr tried three times to join nato was denied, so there for they started warsaw pact to counter nato which was seen as an aggressor for rearming germans.

Let's play this game again, Reagan agreed with Gorbachev the end of the ussr, no warsaw pact nation would be allowed to join nato, under Bush and Clinton. Poland Latvia Lithuania, and Estonia were allowed to join nato.

The military bases positioned globally is a result of the dismantling of the German, Japanese, French and British empires after WW2. When it became clear that the USSR wasn't going to return territory back to the states they had liberated during WW2, the US had no choice but to create a firewall to prevent Soviet expansion further into Europe while European nations reconstructed (a reconstruction payed for by the United States). While China will at some point need to test their new military on the battlefield, it's more interested in it's own economic situation. Just take a look at the previous period of post-Hitler era. It is directed into economical growth from the conflict. Poland and the Baltic states therefore should never have joined NATO in the first place. In terms of this kind of Brinksmanship we are out of practice since the end of the Cold War. It is right to be afraid in that the talk is this big without a suitable warm up.

If Putin wants to talk about deescalation he should show us what he has in the offer bag. If he wants to bully he is apt to end up more then a little bullied. If he wants to threaten war I hope the Russian people know that the West would prefer to trade with them and open up travel to a more wealthy population. Would be good if you interviewed people who are not war and fear mongers! The fact is the military funding of Nato is HUGE! What if Russia sent a fleet just outside New York, or made an alliance and deployed loads of forces at the border in Mexico? Saying that crimes was taken by force is just not accurate, nothing is black and white a lot of people were in favour of this happening in Crimea.
What is being said about Russia the west is doing the same, times 10, literally.
Finally Russia did not invade Georgia in 2008, it intervened in a region where Georgia had committed human rights abuse and there was a vast majority of people living wishing indépendance from Georgia.
Maybe you should get actual experts on, not these criminals.
Of course Russia is a criminal state, but so is every single member of Nato. It wasn't Russia that destroyed Lybia, Irak and Yemen, that was the west. @Robert There was never an agreement for NATO not expanding east "Robert", it was in talks between US secretary of state and Gorbachev. Not between heads of states, it never reached a signed status, and USSR as geopolitical entity was dissolved by Yeltsin.
There was a signed agreement, Budapest memorandum, in which Russia agreed to “to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine” and “to refrain from the threat or use of force” against it. This agreement was in effect during Crimea annexation and arming and directing Donbass separatists. Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in return.
Also, there would be no need for NATO by now, if Russia was a normal state. Former USSR and Warsaw pact members would not have seeked membership if they didn't fear Russia's aggression. Same with Ukraine, its trying to DEFEND itself.

Ukrainians are a great nation, standing for their homeland, check how they bury their war heroes, for example. Russians buried their KIAs in graves without name. That says a lot. For me it wouldn't be a problem with both Moscow and Kiev existing and being friendly. For Moscow it is unimaginable thing. Their political culture requires monopoly, independent Ukraine is a threat exactly because of that, not because of NATO.

@peter ivankovich I’ll be honest Peter l don’t understand what you are trying to say. I think you think democracy is a bad idea and so it is. As Churchill said, it’s the worst system of government in the world, except for all the others. People who fixate about international borders etc (eg Putin and perhaps yourself, l don’t know) tend to forget about the things that really concern most people, like jobs, housing and maybe something a little better for their children. Putin doesn’t have to worry about his people over much as they are powerless. They cannot vote him out. That is the virtue of democracy. You can vote for another liar but who might at least realise why the votes have come their way

@Jon Talbot As for sarcasm being used to make serious points, it`s a refined art to make sarcastic remarks for them to be able to come across as sarcastic remarks. People`s minds would rather perceive sarcastic comments as direct insults. It takes less energy.

@Jon Talbot That`s exactly that. That`s what Taliban and other Arabic fighters/terrorists used to say to justify their killing of civilians in the West. The innocent people, from the Western point of view, elected their consented governments to bomb innocent people, from the Taliban point of view. Therefore innocent people were legitimate pray.
Moreover, ideally democracy sounds fine and dandy. Before people touch it. And then they passionately disagree about what constitutes free and fair elections. Evan a peaceful transfer of power gums up from time to time. And a peaceful transfer of power is not an indication of the result of fair elections. For example, a transfer of power does look peaceful on the outside in the US. But if you dig inside, there`s often to much struggling between lawyers of both major parties.
Reread major US magazines for presidential elections. You`ll sea presidential candidates show up with armies of heavy-duty lawyers. Before the Russians were invented as interfering in American presidential elections, check out what other excuses were for sabotaging the election results. Remember pregnant chads? I do. I`m proud to say I never impregnated a chad.

@peter ivankovich Sarcasm is used to make serious points. It’s not just a joke. We can debate what democracy is and as you say, whether the people who say they want it understand what it is. At minimum it should be an agreement to hold free and fair elections to allow a peaceful transfer of power. You may be aware of the aphorism ‘All power has a tendency to corrupt: absolute power corrupts absolutely’. All governments who are not subject to the consent of the people become corrupt and arrogant.

@Jon Talbot I`d agree with you. It`s pretty tough to figure out when comments convey a serous meaning or are intended as sarcasm. Especially from people one doesn`t know. That`s what I for one have to struggle with pretty often because sometimes apparently serious-sounding remarks come off as baby talk if you think about it. People often pass judgment about things they know nothing about, only personal fancy and sentiments.

They haven’t to try and mollify Putin. NATO members are committed to coming to the aid of each other and the danger is there would be direct conflict with Russia. I think Putin would like a war but no one else does
