Both Goode and Levit put in excellent performances here: Goode is warm, with a particularly well-delineated Mvt 2. Levit has a way of bringing attention to harmonic detail that’s pretty remarkable (see Mvt 1), and Mvt 3 is especially well-served by his sense of colour and fine contrapuntal playing.

Goode:
00:00 – Mvt 1, Vivace ma non troppo / Adagio espressivo
03:42 – Mvt 2, Prestissimo
06:02 – Mvt 3, Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung. Andante molto cantabile ed espressivo

Levit:
19:13 – Mvt 1, Vivace ma non troppo / Adagio espressivo
22:58 – Mvt 2, Prestissimo
25:15 – Mvt 3, Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung. Andante molto cantabile ed espressivo

And if anyone wants the timestamps for the individual variations of the last movement in Levit's performance:

25:15 – THEME
27:23 – VAR.1
29:16 – VAR.2
30:52 – VAR.3
31:18 – VAR.4
33:32 – VAR.5
34:24 – VAR.6

When discussing Beethoven, Neuhaus said: “I always tell my students about the end of this sonata, a sunset somewhere in the mountains when we first see a golden shining, then scarlet, and then a change to a violet shade – and then the night falls… The Sonata is so clear and expressive that it should command such images.”

@juv7026

completely disagree

Of the Beethoven piano sonata of which I’m familiar this is my favorite. I’ll familiarize myself with all 32 but I doubt the others will move me like this one. The variation movement is beyond great

@herrbrahms

I remember a trip I once took to Wengen, Switzerland, in the shadow of the Eiger. This description is absolutely perfect. The last golden rays of the Sun give way; another day is ended; belly is full; heart is broken; yet the soul remains powerful and strives to find contentment whereve it can.

Searing pain, breathtaking beauty --- the greatest of all Masters holds us rapt with the voice of God.
