Mine
Naya Rivera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were in college working part time waitin’ tables
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk with a fear of fallin’
Wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts

I say can you believe it?
As we’re lying on the couch
The moment, I can see it
Yes, yes, I can see it now

Do you remember, we were sitting there, by the water?
You put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

Flash forward and we’re taking on the world together
And there’s a drawer of my things at your place
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I’m guarded
You say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes

But we got bills to pay
We got nothing figured out
When it was hard to take
Yes, yes, this is what I thought about

Do you remember, we were sitting there, by the water?
You put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

Do you remember all the city lights on the water?
You saw me start to believe for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

Oh, oh, oh

And I remember that fight
Two-thirty AM
When everything was slipping right out of our hands
I ran out crying and you followed me out into the street
Braced myself for the goodbye
‘Cause that’s all I’ve ever known
And you took me by surprise
You said, I’ll never leave you alone

You said, I remember how we felt sitting by the water
And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time
I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter
She is the best thing that’s ever been mine

You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine
Do you believe it?
Going to make it now

And I can see it
I can see it now

Overall Meaning

The song "Mine" by Naya Rivera is a beautiful anthem about the ups and downs of love. The opening verse describes a chance meeting between two people who had no intention of falling in love. One was a college student, while the other was a "flight risk" who had an irrational fear of commitment. The chorus reveals that the two have grown to become each other's best thing that's ever been theirs. The lyrics go on to talk about how the couple is now living together, despite their differences, and how they both share a fear of repeating their parents' mistakes.

However, love isn't perfect, and the song acknowledges that. The second verse talks about the struggles of adulthood and how they have put a strain on the relationship. Despite the fights and the uncertainty, the couple still loves each other deeply, as evidenced by the bridge. The bridge describes a moment where the two had a major argument, and the singer of the song ran out into the street, expecting to be alone. Instead, her partner came out after her, telling her that he would never leave her alone. This final section of the song is a reminder that, despite differences and difficulties, the power of love can overcome all.

Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the joys and struggles that come with love. It's a message to all of us that relationships are worth fighting for, even when the going gets tough.

I fell in love with Naya when I was up late one night spending too much time on YouTube when I should have been sleeping. In honesty I’ve never watched one full episode of glee however this was suggested because I am such a HUGE swiftie and have been for 12 years. I remember listening to this the first time and actually crying my eyes out because I was in awe of the talent, beauty and emotion she brought to a song I have loved for years and transformed it into something completely different then the original. I immediately downloaded the glee version on my phone and have cried happy tears (I’m a very emotional person) pretty much every time it’s come on shuffle over the years.

Now her version of this song is even more beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.

I just listened to the statement police have made confirming they have found her body. When the police officer said that naya “helped” her son into the boat and “boosted him from behind” after which he told officers he looked back and saw her “disappear under the water” my heart stopped. I had had a feeling after reading articles the past few days about how dangerous the locals said the lake was (and had been begging for signs to be put up for years warning of the dangers) that she had saved him first, knowing how dangerous it was becoming in the moment and had gotten taken away with the shore before she could save herself as well.

Every good and pure life being taken is such a tragedy especially in this way... but the fact that in her last moments the very last thing she did was save a life, her 4 year old sons life makes her an absolute fucking hero. I can’t imagine the trauma her son will have to fight forever after seeing such a distressing scene but when he grows up I hope he knows just by that one moment what a kind, beautiful, selfless, protective and brave woman his mother was. How much she clearly loved him and how she protected “the best thing that’s ever been mine” to her.

Rest in Peace Naya Rivera - you will not be forgotten. You should be so proud of the woman that you became and the woman you are.

I’m so crushed about what happened to Naya. She was a mom, a daughter, a friend, and much more. Her character made me feel less alone, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Praying for her loved ones.

I also wanted to acknowledge that I am only speaking about her in past tense based on the reports from law enforcement regarding the most likely scenario at this time (7/9/20). Of course I’m holding out hope but also trying to be realistic. Much love to others in pain over this ❤️.
