Anssi Neuvonen wrote most of what would later become their debut album “Orange Morning” while touring Europe and the US with Finnish art pop band Rubik. When they got back to Finland, NEØV got Artturi Taira and Sampsa Väätäinen of Rubik to produce the album during winter 2011-2012, and soon after that the band signed with Finnish indie label Fullsteam Records.
NEØV’s debut single “Windvane” is a dreamy, shoegazy affair that presents the bands characteristic sound palette: floating melodies and flowing rhythms mixed with layered guitars, dozy keyboards and horns. The band’s home town Kuopio is a city surrounded by lakes, with several parts of the town built on small islands. The influence of their surroundings can be heard in the band’s music: it’s expansive but quiet, grandiose but intimate.
NEØV are:
Anssi Neuvonen - vocals, guitar, trumpet
Samuli Neuvonen - drums, trombone
Ari Autio - bass, keyboards
Jonas Ursin - guitar, keyboards
Antti Hevosmaa - trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, percussion
AURORA
Neøv Lyrics

She's turning so lucid
I don't dare to turn my eyes on her
So fade the music
She's way too elusive
I don't dare to turn my eyes on her
My eyes on her
My bengal fire
We're moving far
From the start
In a light of desire
I realize
This is a half-goodbye
My bengal fire
We're moving far
From the start
In a light of desire
I'm on my knees
On this hillside street
I thought she called herself Aurora (so fade the music)
I thought she called herself Aurora (turning so lucid)
I thought she called herself Aurora (so fade the music)
She said we don't know
She said we don't know
We don't know
The lyrics to Neøv's song Aurora are melancholic as the singer speaks of a woman who he thought was named Aurora. He pleads with the music to fade as he cannot bear to look at her even though she appears so enthralling to him. The singer describes their relationship as a "half-goodbye" and acknowledges that they are moving further away from the beginning of their time together. He also refers to her as his "Bengal Fire," a term which could symbolize her intense, passionate nature, but it is unclear if this name was chosen by her or by him.
The chorus repeats the words "I thought she called herself Aurora," three times before the woman in question responds with, "she said we don't know." These lines create a feeling of confusion and mystery around the character of Aurora and her relationship with the singer. It is unclear whether Aurora is a real woman or a metaphor for something else. Perhaps, she is a symbol of the fleeting nature of passion and desire, which are hard to pin down and harder to hold onto.
Overall, the lyrics of Aurora are poetic, enigmatic, and evoke a sense of loss and regret. They suggest the idea that some things are beyond our control and understanding, and that love and desire can be both beautiful and elusive.
