When Love Hangs In The Balance
Ned Doheny Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The road is endless
The rush is all that's real
There's a love on the line
She makes you crazy
But you don't seem to mind
When love hangs in the balance
You can't let it slide
Though it may be a slim chance
It can't be denied
Can't be denied
So you hide what you feel
She's got potential
But she's young in years
You're a fool, don't you see
She doesn't want you
Why can't you let it be
When love hangs in the balance
You can't let it slide
Can't let it slide
Though it may be a slim chance
Can't be denied
It can't be denied
Waste away
Hold your breath till you're blue
Oh no you can't undue
What love has done
You're not the one
She belongs to another
When love hangs in the balance
Can't let it slide
Can't let it slide
Though it may be a slim chance
Can't be denied
Can't be denied
No matter what you say boy
She's with you all the way boy
No matter what you say boy
She's with you all the way boy
The lyrics of "When Love Hangs in the Balance" by Ned Doheny talks about the confusing state that men experience when they are in love. The singer begins by saying that the man is asleep at the wheel, indicating that he is not entirely present in the situation. The road seems endless, perhaps a metaphor for his endless journey of trying to win someone's heart. There's a love on the line, and although she makes him crazy, he cannot seem to shake off his feelings.
The chorus of the song emphasizes that when the love hangs in the balance, it cannot just slide. It's a slim chance, but it can't be denied either. The man appears to be hiding his feelings, perhaps because the woman is young, and he thinks that she doesn't want him. He's trying to let go, but he can't. The lyrics "waste away" and "hold your breath till you're blue" suggest that the man is struggling mentally and emotionally.
In the end, Doheny sings that the woman belongs to another man, and the man cannot undo what love has done. The woman is with him all the way, and the man cannot change her mind. Overall, the song portrays the confusion, anxiety, and helplessness one might experience when trying to navigate through the complications of love.
