Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,
There a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,

Someday I'll wish upon a star

Overall Meaning

Negativland's song "Over the Hiccups" is a satirical take on the famous song "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz. The song starts with the first two lines of the original song, then moves into a distorted repetition of the same lines. The lyrics are deliberately mangled, highlighting the absurdity of the original song's whimsical and overly optimistic tone. The distorted lyrics suggest a sense of confusion and disorientation, as if the singer is lost without a clear sense of direction.

The next few lines seem to be an attempt to replicate the uplifting and positive mood of the original song, but again fail to do so. The line "Someday I'll wish upon a star" is repeated twice, but the following lines subvert the hopeful tone: "wake up where the clouds are far behind me / Where troubles melt like lemon drops / Away above the ... away above the, the chimney tops / Where I'll find me." These lyrics imply that the singer is dissatisfied with their current situation and is yearning for something better, but at the same time lacks a clear vision of what that "something" is.

Finally, the song ends with a slightly altered version of the original's closing line: "If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow / Why oh why can't I?" The lyrics suggest a sense of frustration and longing for something beyond the singer's reach, and the distorted delivery of the lines underscores a sense of deflation rather than triumph. Ultimately, the song is a commentary on the limitations of optimistic fantasies and the reality of our lived experience, reminding us that the rainbow may be out of reach.
