This practice continues from Primer B through Level 1B. Extending the hand to the interval of the 6begins in Level 2A, which allows the introduction of the inverted IV chord. Harmonic and melodic 7ths are also introduced in Level 2A.

Bastien New Traditions does employ numerous hand positions from the very first pieces. Once full 5-finger patterns are achieved, a variety of positions are provided. While it does also introduce Middle-C and C positions (along with other traditional 5-finger patterns), it intermixes other positions so students do not begin to associate fingers (or finger numbers) with any certain notes. Students must write their starting finger numbers (both hands) at the beginning of pieces, for example:
RH 2 begins on ___. LH 3 begins on ___.
