From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, "as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart."[1] As of May 2005 he has sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.[2]
Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given its Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early part of 2011.
In 2008 Neil Diamond scored his first ever Billboard number one album with "Home Before Dark", the album also became his first studio album to get to number one in the UK.
Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon

Love you so much, can't count all the ways
I'd die for you, girl, and all they can say is
"He's not your kind"
They never get tired of puttin' me down
And I never know when I come around
What I'm gonna find
Don't you know
Girl, you'll be a woman soon
Please, come take my hand
Girl, you'll be a woman soon
Soon, you'll need a man
I've been misunderstood for all of my life
But what they're sayin', girl, just cuts like a knife
"The boy's no good"
Well, I finally found what I've been looking for
But if they get the chance, they'll end it for sure
Sure they would
Baby, I've done all I could
It's up to you
Girl, you'll be a woman soon
Please, come take my hand
Girl, you'll be a woman soon
Soon, you'll need a man
Ah girl, you'll be a woman soon
Please, come take my hand
Girl, you'll be a woman soon
Soon, you'll need a man
The song "Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon" by Neil Diamond is widely interpreted as a love ballad from a man to a younger girl. The lyrics convey a sense of protection and love towards the girl, while at the same time addressing the skepticism and judgement from society towards their relationship. The song's message is ultimately one of encouragement towards the girl to take control of her own life and not let others' opinions dictate her decisions.
It starts with the phrase "Girl, you'll be a woman soon" which implies the inevitability of time and growing up. The man expresses his intense love for the girl, which is shown by his willingness to do anything for her, even die for her. However, others who disapprove of their relationship constantly put him down, leaving him uncertain about the future of the relationship. He tells the girl not to let others make up her mind about their relationship and to take control of her own feelings and decisions.
The song also acknowledges the societal judgement towards their relationship, which is shown by the phrase "they'll end it for sure". This could be an allusion to the taboos surrounding age differences and relationships with younger women. However, the man ends the song by encouraging the girl to take his hand and embrace her future as a woman, implying that she has the power to make her own choices.

My wife was 19, we have been married 44 years, we always said we will be old people together. Well, we've grown old together. But when I look at her today I still see the beautiful 19 yr old.
