Oh Holy Night
Neil Diamond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O holy night!
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night
Of the dear Saviour's birth

Long lay the world
In sin and error pining
Till He appeared
And the Soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope
The weary soul rejoices
For yonder breaks
A new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees!
Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night, O holy night
O night divine!

O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night
O holy night
O night divine!

O night when Christ was born

Overall Meaning

Neil Diamond's O Holy Night is an awe-inspiring Christmas carol that touches the very depths of the soul with its message of hope, faith, and redemption. The lyrics begin with a description of a dark and quiet night, where the stars are shining brightly. It is a night that is dear to the heart of every believer, for it is the night when Jesus Christ, the savior of the world, was born. The language is evocative, with words like "holy" and "divine" conveying the sacredness of the moment.

The second verse speaks of the long wait for the savior, with the world lying in sin and error, waiting for his arrival. When Christ was born, the soul felt its worth, and a thrill of hope filled the air. This hope can be felt by all who believe, and it is a source of great joy and comfort. The chorus encourages the listener to fall on their knees and listen to the angel voices that accompanied the birth of the king. The final lines of the song repeat the joyous refrain of the night when Christ was born, underscoring the significance of this moment in history.

Overall, Neil Diamond's O Holy Night is a beautiful and moving tribute to the birth of Christ, and the hope and joy that he brought into the world. It is a song that can be cherished by believers and non-believers alike, for its message of hope is universal and timeless.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here come the wise men from Orient land
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend

Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name

By the way.. one of my favorite songs..
.
..since it is the birth of Jesus song.. and according to the Law of Moses,
for childbirth
the mother is "unclean" 40 days after a boy
and
80 days after a girl chld.
.
So.. it's NOT "holy"...
.
But I sing,
"
Oh awe-some night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the morn of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world, in sin and utter darkness,
Till he appeared,
and the star gave the sign.
.
From here to there,
the angel voices singing,
and yonder sings a solemn, sweet refrain...
.
fall on your knees.. when you hear the angel voices
O ni----ight divine, .. O night when Christ was born...
O night. O awwww---e----some night,
O night divine..
"
..that's all I sing..
my lyrics..
same tune as "O Holy Night".. (adaptation..)..

Grew up listening to his music - Mom would always play his records. His sound on Christmas titles always adds something special to them.

Same here! My mother often listened to Neil Diamond records in the 70s when I was little. Sadly she died when I was 7...domestic violence. But Neil's songs always remind me of her.
