As of 2006, he lives near Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. While Gaiman is most famously known for The Sandman, a series of graphic novels, many of his other works translate well to the spoken word.

Gaiman is a prolific blogger and has a noted interest in music. He befriended Tori Amos early in her career after she sent him a demo tape. His latest obsession is Thea Gilmore. Thea and Tori (among others) appear on a compilation of musical works inspired by his works, entitled Where's Neil When You Need Him?

This is such thoughtful commentary. I'm currently reading 'Cheap Seats" in combo with the first Sandman. Earlier this year, I was reading 'The Graveyard Book' with my thirteen year old son, and he was convinced it was a kid story, just as I was convinced it probably resonates more with adults. That's the power of Gaiman. If you ever get the chance to read 'Fortunately, The Milk' out loud to someone, even yourself, you won't regret it. :)

I!!!! LOVE!!!! THIS!!!! BOOK!!! The View From the Cheap Seats is such an underrated book when it comes to Neil Gaiman's work and I'm so happy to see more people talking about it. Neil Gaiman is literally an author who can just write in absolutely any genre and still have it work for him.

Yes, this one definitely had me adding a number of books to my TBR. It was also a good overview/introduction to some of the foundational SFFH works. It was a charming listening experience.

Give that we are halfway into May and I haven’t finished a single book and Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors, I may need to pick this up soon. I think a few of the pieces in here were also included in his short compilation of essays “Art Matters” (which includes awesome illustrations from Chris Riddell!!) I read that collection at a tough time and it really make me feel better about the importance of art and the fantasy genre, plus very inspirational about writing, like you said.

I'm early in my N.G. journey. Besides watching Princess Mononoke, Mirror Mask and Beowulf (before I knew who he was) I've read the Illustrated Stardust, which I was thoroughly enchanted by - in a whole other way then the movie that I equally love, which was interesting. Then last December I read Coraline (with Dave Mckean's morbid drawings), which I think I liked more - Enchanting and thrilling and empowering (Lovecraft with a happy ending). I would have adored it in my Goosebumps obsessed child years (don't know if I'd have appreciated Carrie then, I mainly because it's epistolary, but I was obsessed with monsters and dark adventures). I also read a short Matrix story by him with some rather neat ideas. I'm planning on Neverwhere next. I know already I will read everything he's done, and happened to find a used "View from the Cheep Seats" and bought it without debate - he's writes as such an amiable companion, I was sure that would extend to non-fiction, and he talks on things I already love or plan to visit.
I'm not reading it cover to cover though, I will ration and treasure each subject - I regularly scan through the topics to remember to pick this up when I get to, or revisit, them. So far I've read "why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming" from which I see we are totally cut from the same cloth - and his interview with Stephen King, because I'm reading the entire works of him also. You've now reminded me I've been meaning to read his "On Lewis, Tolkien and Chesterton", because I'm in the midst of the Silmarillion - I might just do that now...
Since you like his thoughts on writing, do you know he's done a whole Masterclass on that topic? Just in case you want to see him teach, up close and personal for a few hours.

Oddly, I haven't read many Neil Gaiman books, and have had mixed reactions to them - but I adore him as an artist, a creator, the gift to us that he his. So while this has been on my radar, I haven't felt any urgency about getting around to it until now. Now it's important to have this. Thanks as always Liene, saving me time again!

yay for more Gaiman! his stories don't always work for me, but his prose is always staggeringly good imo so it's a matter of finding the stories that are more your thing which there's a high likelihood of being able to do since he offers such variety

I have to resist a lot of urges to not completely drop the rest of my tbr and start reading this book. The temptation is strong so I think I will have to cave in.Based on your video and your remarks in discord, I think I gonna like this book immensly. Afterwards my tbr will explode of course. He gave his kid Carrie, 😆. But I remember watching the movie with my mom when I was a kid.

I've read a lot of Gaiman back when I didn't know what kinds of things I liked to read, including the entire Sandman series, and I have to say I dislike his authorial voice and the way he approaches his topics. I especially disliked Make Good Art xD, so probably not for me.
