One Way Ticket
Neil Sedaka Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
Choo, choo train chugging down the track
Gotta travel on, never coming back
Oh, oh got a one way ticket to the blues

Bye, bye love my baby's leaving me
Now lonely teardrops are all that I can see
Oh, oh got a one way ticket to the blues

Gonna take a trip to lonesome town
Gonna stay at heartbreak hotel
A fool such as I that never learns
I cry a tear so well

[Chorus]

Oh, oh got a one way ticket to the blues
Gonna take a trip to lonesome town
Gonna stay at heartbreak hotel
A fool such as I that never learns
I cry a tear so well

[Chorus]

Oh, oh got a one way ticket to the blues
Oh, oh got a one way ticket to the blues

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Neil Sedaka's song "One Way Ticket" depict a feeling of heartbreak and loneliness. The lyrics begin with a metaphor of a choo-choo train chugging down the track, representing the inevitability of the singer's departure and his lack of control over the situation. He's admitting that he has to move on, and he's never coming back. The repetition of "oh, oh" in the chorus emphasizes the gravity of his situation.

The second verse reveals that the singer's lover is leaving him, and he's left with nothing but tears. He acknowledges that he's headed to "lonesome town" and "heartbreak hotel," both of which are popular locations in music from that time period that represent heartache and despair. The final line of the verse, "I cry a tear so well," shows that the singer is becoming resigned to his fate and has accepted that he will be sad for some time.

The chorus is repeated multiple times throughout the song, emphasizing the repetition of the singer's suffering. In conclusion, the lyrics to "One Way Ticket" showcase a man's acceptance of his fate to travel to a place of heartache and sadness.

I never knew Eruptions version was a cover. This sounds like a disco song way ahead of it's time.

@lionheartroar3104

I saw a single of Eruption's disco version posted, and Neil Sedaka is not on writing credits.

@gurtezz

@@lionheartroar3104 written by Hank Hunter and Jack Keller. Neil Sedaka is just one of the performers of this magnificent song. And he made a great version of it!

@WhitemenaresoSexy

Neil Sedaka is very talented, I found out that he's the one who first sang and probably wrote "Love will keep us together", but Captain and Tennile sang it and tore it up 🔥🔥🔥🔥

This song was written by Jack Keller who also wrote many popular songs in the 60's and many music scores to tv shows. It is a testament that great songwriter as Neil was; that he recognized another piece of fun witty writing and recorded the song, Thanks Neil and Jack.
