Where The Boys Are
Neil Sedaka Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where the boys are
Someone waits for me,
A smiling face, a warm embrace,
Two arms to hold me tenderly.
Where the boys are
My true love will be,
He's walking down some street in town
And I know he's looking there for me.

In the crowd of a million people
I'll find my valentine,
Then I'll climb to the highest steeple
And tell the world he's mine.

'Til he holds me
I wait impatiently.
Where the boys are,
Where the boys are,
Where the boys are,
Someone waits for me.

'Til he holds me
I wait impatiently.
Where the boys are,
Where the boys are,

Where the boys are,
Someone waits for me.

Overall Meaning

In Neil Sedaka's song "Where the Boys Are," the lyrics talk about longing for love and the anticipation that comes with waiting for that special someone. The song opens with the line, "Where the boys are, someone waits for me," which suggests that the singer is actively searching for love. The lyrics go on to describe what the singer is looking for in a partner: "A smiling face, a warm embrace, two arms to hold me tenderly."

The second verse talks about how even in a crowd of a million people, the singer will be able to find their valentine. The use of the metaphor of climbing to the highest steeple and telling the world that he's mine suggests a sort of triumph that comes with finding love. The final verse repeats the chorus, emphasizing the longing and impatience that the singer feels.

Overall, "Where the Boys Are" is a song that captures the excitement and anxiety of searching for love. The lyrics convey a sense of optimism and hopefulness that is common in many love songs, but they also touch on the fear of not finding someone or missing out on love.

This song was the 1960 era love anthem of heterosexual girls and gay boys everywhere! Isn't it wonderful that Neil Sedaka, a gay / bisexual man himself, can finally perform this song that he wrote without having to change the gender of the song? He even received a standing ovation for it! In the past, he wouldn't have been able to sing the song at all or he would have had to sing, "Where The Girls Are." Maybe, there IS some progress being made in the world surrounding gender and sexuality! What do you think? I know one thing..........only Connie Francis and Neil Sedaka can sing this song with all the power and emotion that it deserves!
